In Beneath You, Buffy finds out that Spike has earned himself a soul in an attempt to be worthy of her. The title could hark back to the episode Fool For Love, in which Spike is told by both Cecily and Buffy, “You’re beneath me”. |

I think actually the title is referring to “From Beneath You, It Devours” , especially because this is the episode that Spike says it to Buffy. It’s referring to the hellmouth.

I think it could be both. The best titles are those which tie together more than one aspect of the episode.

In Conversations with Dead People, Buffy tells Webbs the vamp that she sometimes feels better than her friends, that they are “beneath me”.
