‘Out Of This World’ by Bush is the music playing as Buffy stands outside Spike’s crypt, trying to decide whether to enter in Dead Things. The lyrics are:
When we die we go into the arms of those who remember us.
We are home now out of our heads out of our minds.
Out of this world out of our time.
Are you drowning or waving? I just want you to save me.
Should we try to get along. Just try to get along.
So we move we change by the speed of the choices that we make.
And the barriers are all self made. That’s so retrograde.
Are you drowning or waving? I just need you to save me.
Should we try to get along. Just try to get along.
I am alive. I am awake to the trials and confusion we create.
There are times when I feel we’re about to break.
When there’s too much to say.
We are home now out of our heads out of our minds.
Out of this world out of this time.
Out of this time. Out of this time.

I love Bush. They’re awesome cause like all of their songs are random.

I think this scene is one of my all time favorites because it is so sexy and it shows that Buffy actually has some feelings for Spike and struggles with those feelings. Plus, to have a man be able to sense your presence outside his door, then to come after you and say he could “feel you”, wow, there aren’t really words for the sexiness of that!

While “Dead Things” may not be the most popular episode, I consider it one of the most pivotal, particularly vis-a-vis the whole Buffy/Spike relationship (obviously) but also in terms of Buffy’s angst for having been dragged out of “heaven”. I thought SMG did a great job of acting in this episode, both when she beats the snot out of Spike and her breakdown with Tara. Her frustration was palpable.

I really felt so, so sad for Buffy when she broke down with Tara, but I loved what Tara said to her. That Spike did really love her and either way she felt toward him would be ok. Plus it sets up the hysterical (albeit way too quick) interactions between Tara and Spike in “Older and Far Away”, particularly the “I had a cramp” (Spike), “in your pants?” (Tara) exchange that makes me laugh every single time I watch it.

Oh, and sorry b’please, to lead you down the path of temptation. I certainly hope you were inspired to watch “Dead Things” again with Spike and his whole open shirt, hand at the door moment…ahhhhh…what a sexy fiend!

“Oh, and sorry b’please, to lead you down the path of temptation.”
…as if b’please needs to be “led” down that path…now, dragging her OFF that path is the real challenge.

ARHHH! I couldn’t access the trivia pages all day long to comment on everyone’s comments! Now I can finally get through! I guess my comment isn’t all that exciting, but just wanted to note that we all know slightlyem has permanent residence on the path to temptation, so I guess it takes one to know one, right b’please?!?

“slightlyem has permanent residence on the path to temptation…”
Temptation, for me, isn’t so much a “path”, as it is an eight-lane superhighway, with rest stops and clover-leaf exchanges…and NO cops…definitely NO cops.

I completely agree with somethingblue’s first comment but I also love the scene for my own reasons. I’ll break down what I think and why.
To me, the entire scene is about the depth of Buffy’s feelings towards Spike. It shows that Buffy is definitely feeling something more than just a physical/sexual attraction to Spike (maybe she’s even on the way to loving him) and she has more of a connection with him than she likes to think. But she’s blatantly in denial of whatever emotions she might have and she has a hard time trying to deal with them - this is all pretty obvious from the visuals of her on the outside of his crypt door.
But I also think the music is a biiiig hint as to the way she’s feeling. I adore the song and I think some of the lyrics are perfect:
“Are you drowning or waving? I just want you to save me” - referring to how much she suffers from being stuck back in real life and how Spike is the only one who can make her feel
“should we try to get along, just try to get along?” - Buffy knows on some level that Spike’s feelings for her are true and if she admits her own feelings for him, the relationship would not be, let’s face it, such a big fucking mess
“and the barriers are all self-made, that’s so retrograde” - there’s no need for the defensive barries on both sides cos they hinder any progress that might have been made in the relationship
I could go on but I think when you watch the scene and really listen, it’s pretty obvious what means what! And I think I’ve probably bored to death anyone who bothered reading this far.
One last thing - big reason this scene is a favourite is because it’s so damned sexy! Gotta love Spike’s whole standing-hand-at-the-door-and-stalking-out-into-the-night-with-shirt -open thing…*daydreams*

I love the band too, but this is not my favorite song from them.
Anyway, I loved the break-down scene. It’s not only shows SMG’s acting skills and Buffy’s feelings (or non-feelings) for Spike but it shows, that Tara was an insider. She was a really good friend of the Scoobies. It was mentioned in season 5, Real me episode that she feels like an outsider. And I think after the episode Family it wasn’t really showed that much, that she is a Scooby as well. But when Buffy cries her heart out for her: that was soooo beautiful.
And when Tara died they were all kind of busy with Willow going bad so they didn’t have the chance to mourn at all. And I think it’s sad…
