In Conversations with Dead People, Dawn is confronted by an evil spirit in her house, which seems to be trying to stop her mother from contacting her. The spirit is most probably the First attempting to torment her. She performs a casting spell to get rid of the spirit, and performs it from memory - so she must have been practising witchcraft for a while. I cast you from this place. It is your poison and your bane. |

Good on Dawn, Watcher Jr. The real question becomes: which of the ghosts are the First? The black demony-thingy or Joyce? Or are they both the First?

I always thought at the time Joyce was The First but then I went back and watched the episode. After seeing how hard Dawn had to fight to see her mother and how Joyce didn’t torment her (as The First did to Willow) but gave her message and told her she loved her and Buffy, I know believe it was actually Joyce and The First was the ‘black demony-thingy’ trying to stop her from speaking to Dawn. Also, the whole glowing light deal around Joyce also gives it away.
Sidenote: Did that scene actually scare anybody else? That scene was one of only two scenes in Buffy that actually frightened me (the other was when you see the gentlemen floating down the street with their henchman in Hush).

Actually, on the DVD with that episode, the commentary says the Joyce was the First. I wasn’t sure either but I guess they had in mind that she was the First and not the ghost of Joyce.

I think they are now covering up a deleted story. If you read the alternate script for CHOSEN, found on Buffy.nu. Joyce’s words made sense to Dawn and she acted upon them.
This story was later cut so I think that it was origianlly meant to be Joyce!
An interesting point may also be that Joyce didn’t faded different to the two ways the first fades!
