In Older and Far Away, Halfrek reveals that there are different “jobs” for vengeance demons. Anyanka concentrated on scorned women, and Halfrek’s duty was to protect children and punish parents. She originally came to Sunnydale because she heard Dawn’s cry for care and attention. |

she didn’t say there were different “jobs” she said that some like to be diverse. Anya also hinted that the only reason Hally punishes parents is because of childhood trauma

“Jobs” was just a way to describe this - hence the inverted commas.

In “Selfless” (season 7), there’s an interesting clue to why Anya defined her role more narrowly than other vengeance demons did. As Halfrek says here in “Older and Far Away,” the claim that vengence demons avenge wronged women “was Anya’s little raison d’ĂȘtre. Most of us try to be a little more well-rounded.” This hints at Anya’s inclination to interpret things literally.
“Selfless” expands on this idea. Anya says to D’Hoffryn that people tell her, “Your questions are irksome, and perhaps you should take your furs and your literal interpretations to the other side of the river.”
When D’Hoffryn offers to make Anya a vengeance demon, and she asks what she would have to do, he says, “What you do best. Help wronged women punish evil men.” Given her intense literalism, she takes this as her job description.
I’m guessing that D’Hoffryn gave her the line about helping wronged women because he thought that’s what would most likely hook her. If she’d resisted, he might have trotted out a whole list of things that vengeance demons can do.
