Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde

Oz

The episode Beauty and the Beasts is an obvious homage to Robert Louis Stevenson’s 1886 novel The Strange Case of Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde, in which the main character can change into an evil persona after drinking a concoction of chemicals. The German title of the episode is actually ‘Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde’ (hail the subtlety there). Willow references the book when she says, “Mr. Science was doing a Jekyll/Hyde deal”.

I love the story behind this episode. It is not totally just about a ‘Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde’ deal, but a good look at different types of relationships. It shows everything from the most loving, to the beginning relationship, to the abusive one. If you really pay attention, this is a wonderful episode full of lessons.
I like the title, ‘Beauty and the Beasts’, because this episode shows the beauty of the relationship and the beastie part. It is truly brilliant.

Doesn’t it also show the part played in ruining relationships by the over-consumption of alcohol by one partner? I kind of had the idea that that was what Stevenson was getting at.
