Freebird

In The Yoko Factor, Giles sings “Freebird” until Spike interrupts him. The song was originally written and recorded by Lynyrd Skynrd in 1973. The lyrics Giles sings are:

“If I leave here tomorrow, would you still remember me?
For I must be travelling on now,
‘cause there’s too many places I’ve got to see.
But if I stayed here with you, girl, things just couldn’t be the same.
‘Cause I’m as free as a bird, now, and this bird you cannot change.”

It’s moments like these when i relize just how awesome Giles is! This song is just so perfect for him too. For the record: He recorded his own voice, but someone else recorded the guitar.

I loved the way Anthony Stewart Head was slowly integrated into the character of Giles. He really came into himself in season four.

It’s has nothing to do with the Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but I just wanted to mention how great of a song “Freebird” is (of course, there aren’t too many bad songs by Lynyrd Skynyrd.)

I must post an agreement with my brother here. Lynyrd Skynyrd rules! (I realize that they probably aren’t too popular with most of the BTVS fanbase though.)

More Giles singing, yay! I really liked the new side to him that we saw in season 4, he was alot more than just the “watcher and ex-librarian”.

He sure became much cooler in season three around the time that Alexis Denisof showed up. I guess that gave the writers someone really stuffy against whom to counter, so it made for a perfect chance to do this (and he just kept going in that way, thankfully). I must say, though, that I wonder why he stopped singing after season four. It was cool during that time that he was, but it seems a bit weird that he sang three times in five episodes in the middle of the series, and never before or after (save for the musical, obviously).

You hit the nail on the head with giving Giles someone to counter, but apparently the writers were originally going to make Wesley the “cool, relaxed” Watcher - I’m glad they didn’t go that way with him in season 3 though!

Y’know, I thought of exactly the same thing when I watched Restless the other day, it hit me that was the last time we see him singing until Once More With Feeling. It’s like they made a point of the fact that he could play guitar and sing, and then just went “meh, forget it”. Tis a shame.

I love that sound what Giles gives when he notices that Spike is in the room… :D
That sound was Wesley-like (of course “season3-Wesley” :)) just remember Doppelgangland… when Cordy touched his shoulder and he was like: Awhaaahw!
    :D

I used to like this song… but my mom’s boyfriend whom I was close with died in a plane crash a yr. before 9/11 (on Mother’s Day no less) and they played this at his funeral… besides, it didn’t help to hear it every single day at lunch in the cafeteria either! LOL but Anthony’s version was impressive.

Hearing it everyday at lunch? Sounds like how it was at my Georgia high school back when (only it ‘Sweet Home Alabama’ and not ‘Freebird’ that the rednecks always played). Not that I minded.
