Hecate

Willow

In Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered, Amy calls upon Hecate, the patron goddess of witchcraft, to turn Buffy into a rat. Hecate is known in many different guises, including a young woman in a black robe holding torches, as three bodies standing back to back, and as a dark and evil ghost found haunting dark nights with terrifying hounds of hell. In Gingerbread, Amy did a spell to turn herself into a rat, which involved invoking Hecate. Willow also called upon the goddess in Him to turn R.J. Brooks into a woman.

The scene in “Him”, when Willow is doing this spell, is just such a good moment. It’s so silly, but also very funny.

  2. TwoToGo-Grave says:

It’s all true, except for about Dawn. Seeing the scene with the cheerleeding tryout is funny, as is her “snit” (although that’s mostly due to Xander’s comments).

  3. TwoToGo-Grave says:

Oh, I just got the “dieing apparently” reference. I guess I’m a little slow, huh?

  4. The_True_Xander says:

Even though I do not like Dawn at all, I found myself being all embarrased for her when she was talking to RJ and his pals at the lockers. It was just so awkwardy. Stupid empathy…

  5. Abby M. says:

Oh yeah, that whole Dawn-RJ thing was extemely uncomfortable. But my favorite scene in the episode was when you see Buffy with the rocket launcher outside Robin’s office. And then Spike tackels her and walks away like he pinned her and she pulls him down! Funny stuff…

  6. NotFadeAway says:

I love the cheerleading tryout. It’s goofy, ridiculous, and also incredibly sad and pathetic. It makes me feel so bad for Dawn to see that. Also, I love when Xander and Spike steal RJ’s jacket. They act like they’ve got some kind of plan, and then they just run up to him and take it. It’s funny (at least to me.)

  7. MagicBone says:

    I second that emotion.

  8. Comfortador says:

I did not care for Dawn either and felt bad for her also. I had to fastforward through the cheerleading tryouts-it is painful to watch. After seeing her give RJ the “lap dance” in her “painted-on” shirt I, like Willow and Xander, was having thoughts of another kind. I thought that she might have potential (though not that she was a potential.)

  9. MagicBone says:

I, for one, am not going to ask what kind of potential. Don’t feel likemgoing there tonight …

My insides cry for Dawn everytime I watch the cheerleading tryouts. I feel so bad for her. She is trying to impress RJ but all she does is make a fool of herself. But isn’t that what guys do to everyone …?

  10. The_True_Xander says:

Cool guys, anyway. That popularity thing. Evil.

  11. The_True_Xander says:

I liked Season 7. I don’t get why people didn’t like it that much.

  12. TwoToGo-Grave says:

I agree with that last statement. I personally think that season seven is better than most seasons of BTVS (other than 3 and 5, in my opinion anyway).

  13. The_True_Xander says:

Definitely. Season 3 and 7 are my favourites by far.

Although the Him episode is hysterical, does anyone notice that it has nothing to do with the story? I mean, all the other episodes have some relation to the First, or the Turok-han, or Spike’s chip, but that episode seems like a whole different series. Although, as I said, it was funny, I think they should of at least MENTION the First.

  15. TwoToGo-Grave says:

Remember, though, that they can’t mention the First, since it will be revealed as the Big Bad three episodes later. Also, while other episodes (expect for 3 and 4, which don’t, I think) such as 1, 13, and 14 reference the seasonal arc, these are not episodes that are about this. Episodes such as Him (and many others during many other seasons) provide that break from the seasonal arc to give a good stand-alone story. Although I can see why one woudn’t like it, I really do, personally.

  16. TwoToGo-Grave says:

I just thought about it. In “Him”, there is a reference to the First. Buffy states to Spike that he hasn’t spoken to invisible people in thirty minutes, so that might qualify as a mention.
