James

James was a vampire who, along with his love Elizabeth, accompanied Angelus and Darla to Marseilles in 1767. Angel killed Elizabeth in present day Los Angeles, and James vowed to get his vengeance. He had his heart removed by Dr. Gregson in order to be invulnerable for a short period of time. He told Angel, after a long fight, and just before he died “I lived. You just existed.”

Hopefully someone can clear this up for me cos there’s one thing about the whole “invincible” thing I don’t understand. I know that obviously by having his heart taken out, James couldn’t be staked, but why did that stop him from burning up in the sun? He was essentially still a vampire, so should’ve still been vulnerable in the sunlight - I don’t get what his heart had to do with that. Maybe I’m just missing something? But yeah, confused here!

I found myself thinking exactly the same thing when I watched this episode. To me, the whole thing with the vamps and the sunlight is basically just a really nasty allergic reaction, and those are typically skin-related. The sun burns vampires skin and because they are vulnerable to fire that burns through their entire body, but yes, the heart removed thing shouldn’t have anything to do with this. The same with decapitation. Removing the head shouldn’t have anything to do with the heart, so decapitation should still kill James. Wow that was a really long post. Sorry for the ramble :)

Nah it’s not a ramble! You make a damn good point. I think the writers just had to overlook those points for the purpose of the story. Otherwise…he wouldn’t have been very invincible! It’s just a goof, I’m guessing.
