I had the impression that Buffy was going to refer to herself as “Joan of Arc” during the fight scene with the vampires (before she remembered who she was).

i figured it was a play on the fact that “buffy” is an unusual name, while “joan” is a common one. so it’s ironic that she felt all normal and girl-next-door-y, when she was, in fact, a “superhero”. she did the same thing when she assumed the name anne at the end of season 2. that was really her middle name, but i think the innuendo is rather obvious (not only a scheme to try and prevent her being found). i guess the girl just has a yerning for normalness-it’s overrated if you ask me :P
