Joss’s favourite villain

Joss Whedon’s favourite villain in Buffy the Vampire Slayer was the Mayor. He said of him at the Wizard World Convention in Chicago (August 2004):

“Harry Groener was a gentleman and a delight to work with. And that’s another time when an actor came up to me, and he said ‘Do I care about Faith? Really? Or am I just using her for my evil scheme?’ And their father-daughter kind of relationship I thought was one of the most beautiful things in the show. And it came from just that conversation.”

    1. Abby M. says:

My favorite villian is The Mayor too. He was so funny, one of my favorite lines of his (something like this) directed to Faith was, “Drink your milk, theres nothing cool about unhealthy bones. Now, lets talk about killing your friend Buffy!” He was like this cool, swell guy, but evil!

Next would have to be Dark Willow, then Glory, Angelus/Dru/Spike, The First, The Master and if I have to count it, Adam (He was stupid in my opinion, to lame).

    2. mairceridwen says:

I loved the mayor too. and in no particular order, I also like sweet. Vampy Willow. Drusilla.

the thing about the mayor is that he has all these traditional values that he is completely sincere about…like his feelings for the boy scouts.

    3. Abby M. says:

      Exactly!

    4. TwoToGo-Grave says:

I must agree that the mayor is the best (for many of the reasons that have been stated by both Abby and mairceridwen, but can a one episode villian like Sweet be included among the best villians? If so, then the Gentlemen and Holden Webster (played by the great Jonathon M. Woodward) ought to be counted among the best.
Of season-long villians, the only rivals to the mayor could possibly be Spike and Angel in season two, although Glory sure does make for a good one as well.

    5. mairceridwen says:

Ah yes, The Gentleman. Of course a one-time villan can be included. He was a villan. And he was awesome. Holden Webster was stupid.

    6. Jess says:

I loved the Mayor, no competition there. Hated dark Willow, loved Vamp Willow and the Gentlemen. Does D’Hoffryn count? He was fabulous.

    7. Mel says:

My favourite villain was Angelus - the whole season 2, Angel gone bad arc was great. (Season 2 is my best season, and Passion my best ever episode).

I think that DB plays and evil b***** so, so well!!!

I also loved the mayor, he was so comical.

And I can’t believe that me and you are gonna disagree here Jess, but I really like Dark Willow. No matter how many eps I skip in season 6 I always watch the last three.

I do have to agree with you about D’Hoffryn though, another regular who was a good bad guy, as with the mayor, the comical timimg was there.

I also absolutely loved Caleb, the whole southern, priest, women hater thing was great and Nathan Fillion is another, like DB, who is great at being evil. My hubby counts Caleb as one of his fave evils.

    8. mairceridwen says:

      Yes! Yes! d’Hoffryn.

      I loved Dark Willow too.

    9. NotFadeAway says:

I also liked Caleb a lot (how could anyone not love a character played by Nathan Fillion.) However, I have to agree with everyone else and say that my favorite villian was certainly The Mayor. Spike was also great as a villian in season two, as was Glory in season five. Also, I don’t understand why anyone would dislike Dark Willow. Those are some of my all time favorite episodes of the series. Of course, I realize that everyone has their own opinions on the matter.

    10. MagicBone says:

I loved Spike in season two when he was still evil and Dru, cuz, well, she was crazy and everyone loves a crazy chick. Caleb and the Mayor were great because, yeah, they were evil but they had human qualities, like when the Mayor was talking about how the Boy Scouts were the future and everything. And about Dark Willow, any Willow is good, we love Willow we don’t care what Willow she is (scary veiny Willow and crayon breaky Willow) we’ll take whatever we can get. I don’t think there is anyone who doesn’t like Willow.

    11. Abby M. says:

I think the reason I love dark Willow is because it wasn’t like it was souless Willow, it was real Willow—just pissed off. It was cool to see that side of Willow, plus, that seen in Grave with Xander, priceless. I always tear up when he says the line, “it doesn’t matter, I’d still love you.” It was so touching! Anyway back to dark Willow, to see one of their own go evil, but still being the same old person: Awesome!

    12. Smash says:

I can’t believe no one has mentioned them yet…my all time favorite big bad was without a doubt the Nerd Trio. They were so good at being the comic relief during a really dark season and at the same time were still scary when they had to be. I also loved the idea of a human big bad. If you look at the series, sometimes you (no, I’ll correct myself) sometimes I start feeling like monsters=bad, humans=good. The part that makes it great is that they always stick things in to remind you that that’s not the case.
After all the stuff about Angel being a bad guy with no soul and, well, an angel when he has one, it brings a lot of insight seeing these basically good guys being evil and actually feeling bad about it. It breaks my heart seeing Andrew and Jonathan in Dead Things. I guess Andrew became more of a fan favorite in the seventh season, but as for me I love the nerds in season six.

After them, I’d have to say Glory, The Master/Darla , Sweet, The Mayor, Caleb, Angel/Dru/Spike, and Ethan Rayne…but come on, you have to admit, all the bad guys were good! I can’t bring myself to count Willow as a villian though, because it’s just too sad!

    13. Abby M. says:

It is sad, but that is what made it so cool!

    14. NotFadeAway says:

You are right about the one-time villians, mairceridwen. After thinking about it, I must agree with that now. Still, Holden is a great character (I don’t know if villian is the right term, exactly, after all). I do have to agree about D’Hoffren as a top villian, as well. Also, someone needs to give some props to Ted, as John Ritter was great in that role. I tend to despise celebrity guest stars, but that episode is outstanding.

    15. TwoToGo-Grave says:

Oops, the above post came from me and not NotFadeAway. He is my brother, and I was logged on under his name, without realizing it. I wanted to point that out, although I don’t guess it’s too big of a deal.

    16. NotFadeAway says:

WRONG, it’s a huge deal (just kidding.)

    17. willow-fan-4ever says:

I like almost all of the villains except for The First(couldnt even hurt anyone by itself), Adam, and the master. My favorite is Dark Willow… I dressed up like her for Halloween.

    18. willow-fan-4ever says:

Oh ya, I also hate Warren because he killed Tara.

    19. mairceridwen says:

Did you guys like switch bodies or something.

I liked two of the three nerds, Andrew and Jonathan. Warren just wasn’t funny. I mean, as a story arc, the nerds worked, but I didn’t like them the way that I like the mayor, d’hoffryn, dru, sweet and so forth

Despite my feelings for Holden, I do adore Jonathan Woodward.

    20. Smash says:

As for myself, I kind of liked that Warren wasn’t funny. For them to be a decent big bad, you had to take at least one of them seriously right? But I can see that you’re saying.

Is it creepy that I thought the Master was incredibly hot?

    21. Abby M. says:

Yeah, yeah it is. Just kidding, we all have our crushes. Yours is just…unique.. :)

    22. mairceridwen says:

      no. it’s just plain creepy.

    23. Anton says:

When the Mayor appeared after Graduation, in flashbacks or as the First’s face, I found him less effective because the subtlety was gone.

    24. Dawn says:

My fave villain was Glory she was just… one crazy hot chick!

the mayor and Drusilla were great also!

vampy willow is ofcourse a fan favourite :)

    25. Zippy says:

Spike and the nerds are my definite favorite villians.
      Adam was my least favorite.

    26. storyteller says:

I can’t really pick a favourite, because they were all good in my opinion (except Adam), but I absolutely loved the Nerds. I actually liked The First also, because it could become other people, it brought something new.

Also, I have to admit, Caleb is the only villain that truly scared me. The performance was brilliant.

    27. Jet says:

i like them all…i even like Adam. he was going about everything a different way. he was unique. part demon, part monster, part human. it was the supernatural and technology mixed. and technology lost. which is great. i loved yet hated season 4. i hate hate hate the initiative and when the demons started killing off soldier boys i was so happy. that season made me angry….

but yeah..the mayor and the gentlemen for sure. anya was a villian for like 2 seconds too, wasn’t she? caleb is one of my favorites though…but i have a mad nathan fillion crush so it’s to be expected.

    28. beagle says:

All bow to the most yummy Glorificous!

    29. slightlyembarrased says:

      Glorificus rocked my world.

    30. Jet says:

      down with the initiative!…again.

    31. hannah_wish01 says:

i though Caleb was realy scarey, its not as though he was scarey looking just the fact that he was seemingly unkillable, untill the hole slicing him through the middle thing. Also Angulus was just soo great i loved evil angel much better than good Angel. plus DB plays Angelus so much better than Good Angel, well in my opinion anyway!

    32. AnyaRocks says:

My favourites were The Mayor and Glory. They weren’t only evil, but funny too.

    33. MagicBone says:

I loved the nerds but not as villians. I didn’t like them as much when they started killing people (and had to boycott them a bit after Tara’s murder) but I always loved Andrew. He was great. And Glory was hilarious and her minions kicked ass. Adam sucked. He was lame. Been there … done that.

    34. All4Spike says:

My favourite main season villains were Angelus/Spike/Drusilla in season 2… their chemistry was magic and there was so much humour in the mix… and Glory in season 5.

I can’t pick Adam as a favourite villain as he was as much a victim of circumstance as anything else, he was only as he was because of Maggie Walsh’s Frankenstein complex.

Although Caleb in season 7 was really creepy I couldn’t hate him because he was played by Nathan Fillion from Firefly, and I loved him in that.

The gentlemen were my favourite single episode villains, closely followed by Ethan Rayne who was always so funny, and Gnarl, I loved his sing-song voice… “Did they leave you as a gifty for me? Are you a tasty little gifty?

Does Olaf the troll count as a baddy? He was hilarious too… can you tell I prefer the baddies with an element of humour in the mix?

    35. NotFadeAway says:

I have to agree with you All4Spike. It’s impossible to ever hate Nathon Fillion (same with Gina Torres and Adam Baldwin on Angel.) Also, I wanted to mention my favorite villion, which has to be the Mayor.

    36. NotFadeAway says:

Wow, I justed noticed that I already made a post similar to this last one (back on November 10.) Guess it was so long ago I just forgot I had made it.

    37. DarthRosenberg says:

Oh, it’s so hard to decide……
      Maybe…
      1. Vamp Willow
      2. Dark Willow
      3. Nerd Trio
      4. Sweet
      5. Caleb
I think my list is pretty usual… :(
