In the episode Angel, Angel says to Darla, “What’s with the Catholic schoolgirl look? Last time I saw you it was kimonos.” This line was followed up four years later in the Angel episode ‘Darla’. In a flashback to the Chinese Boxer Rebellion, Darla wears a kimono. |

See also, “Enemies” (season 3):
ANGEL: I’m sorry. I wanted to take you out somewhere fun. It’s been a long time since I’ve been to the movies. They changed.
BUFFY: A little scary. And a little not, which is also scary. I’m sorry. I just, I don’t like getting you worked up like that. We can’t actually do any of those things. You’d lose your soul. Besides, I don’t even own a kimono.

Do they wear kimonos in China? Isn’t that a Japan thing?

Kimonos are definitely a Japanese thing, not a Chinese thing. I have many Asian friends who can attest to this. I don’t think I can provide any insight as to why she was wearing one, though…
