In that same episode Dawn calls Xander “Alex”. It might be linked to the fact that Xander’s name is Alex in the French subbed version.
I think it was in the Season Five DVD Extras, Nicholas Brendon said people in France were constantly calling him Alex.

well yeah, cause his real name is Alexander and he just goes by Xander for short whereas most people named Alexander would probably go by Alex, not Xander

There’s a guy named Alexander who sits behind me in my spanish class and I have the persistent urge to call him Xander instead of Alex.
