In Jane Espenson’s audio commentary for Conversations with Dead People, she said that Joyce had a line that was removed from the script. After Dawn performed her spell, she thought that she had brought Joyce back from the dead.
This ties in with the fact that Joyce was supposedly the First in that scene. |

I must say, I’m so glad that they didn’t do this. I was very surprised when it was revealed that this villian was the First, and a mention like this may have made people (including me) think about the similarities between this unknown villian and the First. On the other hand, forshadowing that I catch after the fact is always cool in my mind.

*sigh* I was blissfully trying to ignore that Joyce in that episode was none other then the First. Oh well, at least they didn’t put this line in there. That would have ruined trying to figure out who/what is was!

Am I the only one who never doubted that Joyce was really The First? I guess it just never occurred to me that it was anything else…

I actually was confused by the whole thought that Joyce was the First in this episode for the simple fact that 1) there was the other demon that was present 2) Dawn defeated that demon and 3) the illuminating light that was present when Joyce was actually seen. You never saw an illuminating light when the First showed his/her/itself with other characters before so why now?

I guess somehow I thought whatever The First was doing, it was trying to trick Dawn into thinking that it was really Joyce. I never really thought about the mechanics of it.

I mean when Willow got a visit from the first all was good, she didnt use Tara’s name at all, she just kept saying “she” insinuating that she was talking about Tara but never gave her name. The same was true when the First was talking to Calib in Buffy’s form. She never mentioned her name to Calib just showed him that that was what Buffy looked like. Joyce actually says to Dawn Buffy’s name if im not mistaken.
