The two actresses playing the blonde she-vamps are called Mercedes McNab and Julie Benz… Mercedes Benz, anybody? A coincidence? Maybe, but knowing that Joss has a twisted mind maybe not… Mercedes Benz is a European brand of cars. It’s also strange that Harmony and Darla are the only main vampires to be American. Angel is Irish, the Master is German, Spike and Drusilla are English. |

The Master was German? Since when?
February 16th, 2006 at 6:51 pm
Yes, in original Whedon’s script of “The Harvest” the original human Master was a German guy called Heinrich Joseph Nest, which lived a lot before 17th century, when he vamped Darla… It makes sense, because the Master is modeled after Murnau’s and Herzog’s German movies vampire Nosferatu…

“Jawohl” for “yes, sure” is the right spelling! ;)

Oh, ehm… I’m not German but Italian! My own language is pronounced in the funniest way all over the series! Worst is Willow! ;)

I don’t think darla is/was american. She became a vampire before America was a country.
February 22nd, 2006 at 11:43 am
No…I haven’t watched it for a while, but I’m pretty sure Darla was sired by the master somewhere in the US (well, when it was still colonies). I’m thinking Virginia for some reason–I might be wrong about that, but I’m almost positive it was in the States.
February 22nd, 2006 at 12:16 pm
You’re not wrong snowflake. Darla was shown in a flashback in the Angel episode “Darla” being sired by The Master. And it was indeed in Virginia.
February 22nd, 2006 at 5:12 pm
The Master’s mouth is red from blood stains, I’m sure he’s had his fair share or necky goodness. Second, Darla is American, and yes from Virginia. She doesn’t have a European accent, or a British one, and it’s mentioned in season 1.
February 22nd, 2006 at 5:38 pm
In this show you can’t really tell which part of the world they’re from just by listening to the accent. Giles’s casual girlfriend Olivia is a good example… which part of England is she from really!!? She keeps on changing accent all the time. But Darla was sired in Virginia, so that’s true.

And didn’t the fruitpunch-mouthed (I refuse to support Kool-aid with product placement in my comments! oops damn!) German master paint Luke’s head with the Mercedes Benz symbol? (more product placement!) I’m seeing a patern here.

Now, that is funny… and obviously a nazi conspiracy, you know they were all into the mystic and all.

There’s creepy and then there’s creepy …
February 23rd, 2006 at 2:29 am
Oh, wait. Okay, the thing with Darla. I had this whole conspiracy cover up vampire thing. I was studying the Virginia colony and the Roanoke fiasco in school the first time I watched ‘Darla’ (the Angel ep where we see Darla being sired). I don’t remember the year she was sired, 16-something but I had this idea. You know how all of the people at Roanoke disappeared suddenly? Well, I thought “what if The Master and his new bestest gal pal Darla went on a rampage and killed everyone and that’s why everyone was gone!??!” I thought that I had the best idea ever and had cracked it and was brilliant until I realized that Darla was sired like 7 years after that happened or something. There was a problem with the years. The dates didn’t fit.
“Buffy: goes great with a side of lo-fat history!”
February 23rd, 2006 at 6:49 pm
Well said, MB! Darla was sired in 1609, so she cannot be accused of the mysterious disappearence of the Roanoke’s colonists in 1601, but the Master yes indeed!
And thank you Comfortador for corroborating the thesis of Mercedes Benz conspiracy! ;) Another element is the fact that in Buffy season 5 Giles buys a BMW car, the German rival brand of Mercedes Benz, “all red and sporty”…

Didn’t Riley have a BMW? “Ultimate driving machine my ass.” The Replacement, I think.
February 24th, 2006 at 8:36 pm
Yep; that’s a great line.
February 25th, 2006 at 6:09 am
The colonists still had accents though. They didn’t just forget them when they landed on the America shaped continent. But…still wasn’t a country. Might have been the Virginia colony. In fact she was sired 2 years after it was founded if it was 1609. It became a state in 1788. In all likelihood… she wasn’t born there. But yeah, the writers’ probably didn’t know that… so sure, she was sired in Virginia, the unstate. I think she just lost her accent like Angel. Or she couldn’t do it, like David.
That line is brilliant and a very interesting point with the Mercedes Benz thing.

“Giles’s casual girlfriend Olivia is a good example… which part of England is she from really!!? She keeps on changing accent all the time.”
Angel242 - Olivia’s accent didn’t change. Phina Oruche, who played Olivia, is from England.
