There are many unusual names in the Whedonverse, and ‘Andrew’ is certainly not one of them. His name is not so meaningless, however, if we consider that it is a reference to the ‘merry-andrew’of olde. A merry-andrew is essentially a clown or buffoon character, a sort of amusing diversion or sidekick to the ‘mountebank’. The mountebank is a charlaton, a peddlar of untruths, a boastful pretender to a knowledge or skill. The merry-andrew is the comic accomplice of the mountebank, who foolishly imitated his masters actions for laughs. |
