Mr. Platt was a cool school counsellor who smoked like a chimney. Buffy visited him as a requirement for being allowed back into Sunnydale High. He was killed by Pete in Beauty and the Beasts, whilst doing what he did best: smoking. Appeared in: Beauty and the Beasts |

I think that Mr Platt is a really significant character, because he signifies a very important moment in Buffy’s life.
Whenever I watch this episode (which comes around every 120 or so episodes in my schedule) I am struck with sadness. Buffy has to go see the school counselor as a condition of re-enrolment. After her initial skepticism, she warms to him and ultimately decides to confide in him. She seeks the counsel of this person, and then it turns out he is dead, not listening, unable to hear her.
I see this as the last time Buffy actually lets out her feelings for about 3 years (til season 6); and the last time ever thatshe really reaches out to someone to say, “help me, I’m not dealing, and I don’t know what to do!”
As season 3 pans out, those closest to her are on edge about the return of Angelus, and with Faith in the mix, and Wesley, the Mayor and the Ascension… there’s no time for sharing feelings and seeking support about not dealing. She has to focus on being strong, and leading. Her relationship with Giles is the one of the most beautiful relationships on the show, but it was never a place where Buffy could share her fears and worries. She has to detach from Angel too.
Then Angel moves to LA, and its all pain and heartache.
Buffy never trusts her feelings to Riley, a major theme of their relationship and break up. Distance grows between Buffy, Willow and Xander. By season 5 Dawn is in the picture and Buffy shoulders parenting responsibilities in addition to being the slayer, and has to keep it all together, all inside, to be the strong one for everybody, to protect her loved ones and the world. Again, no time to contemplate and share with others her fears and worries.
Season 6? Well things don’t start out so well for her, with the whole coffin thing, and next time she really lets out her feelings are to Spike– the only person she can relate to. But even then she doesn’t have anyone to ask for help.
I know it’s a lot, but somehow this just deeply moves me every time. I feel so sad for the loneliness Buffy deals with as part of her destiny.
No wonder she makes all those demented speeches in season 7.
