The Orb Of Thesulah was the key to translating the Transliteration Annuls for the Rituals of the Undead. These texts contained the spell to restore a soul to the undead but were lost. In Becoming (Part 1), Giles says to Willow that he has an Orb Of Thesulah which can restore Angel’s soul - he uses it as a paper weight. In Passion, the owner of the Occult shop says to Jenny that someone bought an Orb but the person that bought it was going to use it as a paper weight, so he must have been talking about Giles.

If the orb was in the box it could sill be used as a paper weight. And anther thing that makes me sad: Maybe if Jenny had known that Giles had an orb, Dru never would have got the vision about her buying one and so Angelus wouldn’t have killed her…sigh….I can only imagine… ;)

The orb wasn’t really the key to translating the text, was it? It’s supposed to contain the soul until it can be transferred into a person. The actual translation of the text Jenny performed on her computer.

The store manager said he sold a couple of them as new aged paper weights. Giles, upon buying his, would obviously have known what it was. While he might be using it as a paper weight, he knows what the Orb’s true use is. Therefore, he would not have to buy it under the guise of a paper weight. He would have just bought an Orb of Thesulah.

I have an orb of thesulah. I’m loaning it to Anya to weigh down all her piles of cash. She’s quite the capitalist these days (except that she’s dead and all, but don’t get me started on that blasphemy).
