Ovu Mobani

Ovu

In Dead Man’s Party, Joyce got an evil-looking Nigerian mask from her gallery and hung it on her wall. The mask embodied the power of a demon, Ovu Mobani, which was able to ressurect the dead. If one of the zombies put it on, it made them the demon incarnate. Joyce’s friend Pat was killed by a zombie, reanimated and put the mask on. Buffy destroyed the mask (and demon-Pat) by driving a spade through it’s eyes, which were the source of it’s paralysing power.

I always felt Buffy’s reaction to killing Pat/Ovu Mobani was a tad odd, and a bit nasty.

I know Pat was pretty irritating, and already technically dead at the point when spade met eyes, but still…you’d expect a wee bit of remorse from the Buffster.

Joyce didn’t seem unduly worried about the whole business either!

    2. Rozzi says:

I agree, but I know ppl like that are well annoying. Mind you after slaughtering ten dozen demons and dustin quite a number of vamps I think she would have learnt to get over killign the ppl she knew

    3. MagicBone says:

At least she didn’t squish the eyes like in Same Time, Same Place

    4. slightlyembarrased says:

I, for one, would have killed Pat even if she wasn’t Ovu Mobani…she had it coming to her.

    5. MagicBone says:

She was annoying. With her empanadas and whatever. And The Deep End of the Ocean. And the schnapps. Hahahaha

    6. somethingblue says:

I hated Pat in an illogical, maniacal way.

    7. Jet says:

She didn’t even know Buffy or the situation and she put her nose into it thinking she knew what she was talking about. She had it comin’.

    8. NotFadeAway says:

Pat was pretty annoying (actually very annoying), but what I find really upsetting about the character is the fact that we are supposed to buy that Joyce became close to this person. I know that she was hurt and worried, but it’s hard to believe that Joyce wouldn’t have better taste in friends than this (not that we ever saw her other friends, but still.)

    9. snowflake5684 says:

I think that with Buffy gone, Joyce clung to the first person who came along and was willing to help, no matter how annoying she was. This is also why I think Joyce wasn’t that upset by Pat’s death–even if she was relying on Pat for moral support while Buffy was gone, they weren’t really that close, and now that Buffy’s back, Joyce doesn’t really need her anymore.

I can understand that Snowflake, but Pat is just so annoying that I have trouble seeing Joyce being friends with her. By the way, I realize that my overblown hatred of this character is showing here.
