Owen was a shy and good-looking boy in Buffy’s class. Cordelia chased him but he asked Buffy on a date. Buffy was forced to leave the date early to go on a Slayer-related mission but Owen followed her. They were attacked by a vampire. Owen discovered he loved being in danger and Buffy broke up with him when she realised she didn’t want to have to protect him in Never Kill a Boy on the First Date. After breaking up with Owen, Buffy explains her decision to Giles:
“[H]e wants to be Danger Man. You, Xander, Willow, you guys… you guys know the score, you’re careful. Two days in my world and Owen really would get himself killed. Or I’d get him killed.”
Honestly, I never found this convincing. It’s the fifth episode, there’s hardly been time enough for the other Scoobies to distinguish themselves for their carefulness (not to mention that Xander’s lack thereof is an occasional source of humour). Plus, it isn’t long after this that Cordelia becomes a (sort of) member of the Scoobies.

Yes, I had the same thoughts but I believe Xander, Cordy, and even Willow found out about the slayer accidentally. Which would’ve been a better excuse. Although, Xander, Will, and Cordy were all scared from the beginning while Owen wasn’t.

I think Buffy’s point is that Owen was too into the dangerous element of her Slayage, rather than his carefulness. She senses already that her new friends would be less willing to be hurt than would.
