In Something Blue, Spike reveals himself to be a fan of the NBC supernatural soap Passions (”Passions is on! Timmy’s down the bloody well and if you make me miss it, I’ll…”). He has a discussion with Joyce about it in season five’s Checkpoint, and in Real Me, Giles says, “I watched Passions with Spike. Let us never speak of it”. Passions returned the favour and referenced Buffy in an episode - Hecuba: “I wonder what else is on the Mirror Channel…ooh…Fang! oh- unsuspecting victim. Go you bloodsuckers! Go! Oh! Oh, damn that Buffy! I don’t know what Spike sees in that girl!”

Spike also seems to enjoy Dawsons Creek which was also screened on the WB in America. In season 4 we hear Spike shouting at the tv trying to give Pacey (played by Joshua Jackson) advice on his lovelife in the show. Perhaps the chip gave him more time to watch tv instead of killing!

There was also an episode where Ethan suggested to Theresa that they just stay in and watch Buffy. Sarah Michelle Gellar was very vocal about her obsession with Passions, and the two shows shared a pretty cool synergistic relationship for a while. It made me happy.

Don’t forget also there was Buffy’s reference to Dawson’s Creek in ‘Chosen’ when she says “Are you just going to come here and go all Dawson on me every time I have a boyfriend?” because Angel turned up and was jealous of Spike in exactly the same way as he had turned up in ‘The Yoko factor’ displaying jealousy of Riley.
