Okay, I feel dumb — what happened to her first Watcher? Was he killed? Did she just move away? Surely not — isn’t your Watcher your Watcher “until death do us part”?

    2. ant4buffy says:

He got killed in the Movie. Granted that the show wasn’t really sposed to be related to the movie but she was in the Gym for the climatic battle and Merrick got killed by a vamp early on. The reason that Buffy’s watcher isn’t played by Donald Sutherland in the show is probably because, as Joss said, he is a tosser (probably not using that word) and he kept changing the lines in the film.

    3. Jess says:

I think he called Sutherland a ‘prick’.

    4. Abby M. says:

He said Sutherland kept changing his lines when all it did was mess up the story and Jess your right, he called him a ‘prick’.

Also, the series is based on the original script of the BtVS movie. Where (as referenced in the show) the gym is burned down to kill the vampires. I believe I read somewhere that the original script had Merrick commiting suicide to avoid being sired by Lothos (I think that is his name). Joss had to rewright the original script because it was to dark.
