Sonnets from the Portuguese

In The Witch, Amy said about cheerleading tryouts, “How do I hate this? Let me count the ways.” This is a misquote from a love poem by Elizabeth Barrett Browning titled Sonnets from the Portuguese. The real quote is, “How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.”
In Helpless, Angel bought Buffy an edition of Sonnets From the Portuguese for her eighteenth birthday.

Oddly, the book in ‘Helpless’ is not an actual copy. When Buffy flips the page, the “sonnet” is a seemingly random collection of (what seems to be) first lines from EBB’s sonnets. Copyright prohibitions, perhaps?

Also, Angel writes “Always” inside. . .and then leaves her at the end of the season.

    2. Jess says:

Maybe he meant “Always… going to be broody and unreliable”?

    3. Mullsen says:

tadpole: It seems to be the index page. After each line it looks to be page numbers for the poems.

    4. lins11 says:

We see that even though Angel left at the end of season 3 he still meant Always… At the end of season 5 Angel we see that he’s jealous of the immortal saying that he’s still waiting for the cookie dough to bake…why should the immortal be eating the cookie dough! This is a reference to Buffy’s speech in season 7 finale, Chosen, where she says that she need to figure out what she needs and she is like cookie dough. At the time Angel didn’t like the analogy! But he is still hers…Always

    5. MagicBone says:

Doesn’t Angel, or rather Angelus, write ‘Always’ somewhere else too? Or am I just thinking he did?

    6. AnyaRocks says:

Maybe it meant, that no matter where they were or however far apart they were, she was always in his heart.

    7. slightlyembarrased says:

I think he meant “No matter how many acting classes I take, I will ‘always’ be a stiff.”

Truth be told, he wasn’t terrible in “Angel” (the series, not the ep), but his range is a bit limited; though, in his defense, the character wasn’t really written with a lot of nuance. Or maybe it was that it was written with too MUCH nuance for his limited range…although, in point of fact, he was pretty good as Angelus.

Oh yeah…one of my favorites of the many Spike/Angel bickerings was the one about who would win in a fight, astronauts or cavemen? When my friends and I are bored, I’ll propose this question…it’s fun!

The only thing I didn’t like about Boreanaz’s acting of Angelus was how he changed. I loved Buffy season 2 Angelus, but Angel season 4 Angelus was different. They played him up to be more intellectual and mind-controlling then he seemed. At first, he just seemed like a damn good vampire who loved to cause pain and more playfully evil. In Angel, he seemed more like a mastermind and straight-to-the-point evil. Am I alone on this?

    10. MissKittyFantastico says:

No, I gotta agree with you there Abby. I saw the differences too and was a bit disappointed. I much prefered his Angelus in Buffy S2 as well… His tormenting Spike when he was in the wheelchair was just great, he flirted with Dru and just really seemed like fun but in a murderous evil sort of way!!

    11. Abby M. says:

Exactly! I loved when Angelus tormented Spike! When he called him “rollerboy” and said he would take Spike with him if he ever needed a really good parking space: Classic!
