The Monkey’s Paw

The end sequence of Forever is very similar to W.W. Jacobs’s short story The Monkey’s Paw. In the story, the wife (Dawn) wishes (casts a spell to bring) her son (mother) back from the dead, he (she) appeares at the door, wife (Buffy) rushes down and throws open the door, just as husband (Dawn) makes a third wish (rips the photo in half) and the son (Joyce) vanishes.

    1. Abby M. says:

Just so if anyone cares, the story is:

Someone gives this older couple a real monkeys paw. The paw is supposed to give them 3 wishes. They are poor so the first thing they wish for is some money. The next thing they know is their son (who worked in a factory) was killed by getting caught in a machine (imagine the imagery) and for compensation, the company gives them a check.

Relizing their wish killed her son, the wife wishes he was alive. Now, that would mean whatever state he was in physically or mentally, he would be alive. There is a knock at the door and the wife runs to answer it. Knowing that the son would be all mangled, the man wishes the son dead (or that she never made the second wish, I can’t remember) and right as the women opens the door, he is gone.

Moral of the story: Be careful what you wish for. This summary may be a little off but it is pretty accurate. I read it couple of years ago for an english assignment and I’m surprised I actually remember it.

I think I prefer the trivia website version (apart from the confusing brackets)

    3. Jess says:

That version is just pointing out the similarities of the two stories. Abby’s version is interesting for those (like me) who didn’t know the story of the monkey’s paw. Brackets (don’t you just love them?!)

“The Monkey’s Paw” was also the inspiration for the Stephen King novel “Pet Sematary” which this episode’s ressurection scenario reminded of.
