Winnie the Pooh

In Get It Done, the First as Chloe says, “T.T.F.N.” Rona explains this is the favourite saying of Tigger in the Disney version of A.A. Milne’s childrens’ book Winnie the Pooh. “T.T.F.N.” means “ta ta for now”.

actually, Tigger most definitely does not say “T.T.F.N.” in the Winnie the Pooh books. This must be taken from the evil, evil corporate money-grabbing Disney cartoons.

  2. Jess says:

You’re right - I’ll put that this is a reference to the movie version (which I agree, managed to suck all the charm from the original book!)

  3. hailtothechimp says:

Yes indeed. The Disney versions turn the gag-inducing, cutesiness up to near fatal levels, while heaving the delicate charm of the original stories overboard.

As for the animation, well all I can say is that E H Shepard must be rolling in his grave…

    Exhibit A

    Exhibit B

    God help us all…

That phrase has nothing to do with Disnery. It was Paul Winchell who did the voice of Tigger who came up with the phrase, inspired by his wife, “aBritish lady named Jean, he inserted the phrase “Ta-Ta For Now” (TTFN) into the script AGAINST Disney’s orders and it caught on with the youngsters”

would it kill you guys to do a little research?

  5. mairceridwen says:

Though the source of the phrase would be the Disney movie, it wasn’t Disney’s writers who came up with it. So you really can’t blame them for it either.

mairceridwen - please don’t be so rude. This website is an enormous amount of work and is researched thoroughly. As far as I’m concerned, superdinosaurboy told me that the phrase was in the Disney version and I discovered that this was true, so added it to the website. I didn’t see any reason to do any more research into this piece of trivia.

Yes, your research is interesting, and I appreciate any feedback and comments that people have, as long as they are said a polite manner.

    mairceridwen,

Regardless of the genesis of TTFN, it doesn’t alter the fact that the Disneyfied version of Pooh makes me want to puke “hunny”!

And anyway, all Jess & superdinosaurboy boy are saying is that it occurs in the Disney movies. That’s a fact, regardless of who the instigator of the phrase was. So your “would it kill you guys to do a little research?” comment is not only rude and patronising, it’s also completely unnecessary.

I’m sorry I was rude. The initial comment by superdinoboy made it seem like “Ta Ta For Now” was invented by the evil American corporation Disney when in fact, it seems like an attempt on Winchell’s part to restore some of the story’s original British charm to the character. I have never actually seen any of Disney Pooh movies because, Disney movies (with the exception of Pixar films) tend to be useless piles of donkeypoop

No worries, mairceridwen my friend. Thanks for the gracious apology.

And you’re right about Disney and Pixar. I love practically everything Pixar have produced over the last decade, whereas, in contrast, Disney seem to be determined to plunge themselves back into the black pit of medicocrity they were in until they were rescued, somewhat, by the likes of “The Little Mermaid”, “Beauty and the Beast” etc.

I’m still a fan of early Disney stuff though: Pinnochio, Sleeping Beauty etc, as those early efforts retain some of the darkness and scariness of the original stories. Plus, superb animation.

As far as I know Pixar are shortly to cut the apron strings and sever themselves from Disney entirely. The connection only amounts to a publicity/distribution deal after all I think, as the talented folk at Pixar seem to have a large degree of independent creative control.

What the success of Pixar has proven is you can’t FORCE charm! Pixar make probably the most charming and engaging children’s entertainment in the world today and it’s all down to artistic integrity and a refusal to engage in too much artless, corporate, decision making.

A lot of kids stuff produced today reminds me of Lisa Simpson’s words about the ill-fated Poochie the Dog (in “Itchy and Scratchy”): “a soulless by-product of committee thinking”!

If I remember right TTFN dates from around WWII (so couldn’t have been in the original books). That was a period when many alphabetisms originated for example ITMA–It’s That Man Again. Which originally referred to Hitler, but then became the title of a comedy programme on the wireless
