actually, it’s been mentioned many times in buffy that only direct sunlight harms vampires (Something Blue). so it is possible for vampires to be in indirect sunlight, and it is also possible to get tanned, or sunburned from indirect sunlight. In the 6th season it shows spike outside while sitting in the shade. He could’ve gotten a tan or sunburn then also.
