In The Weight of the World, Giles discovers that Dawn’s blood is the key (no pun intended) to the ritual that will allow Glory to open the dimensional portal to return home. Giles says, “Once the blood is shed at a certain time and place, the fabric which separates all realities will be ripped apart. Dimensions will pour into one another with no barriers to stop them. Reality as we know it will be destroyed, and chaos will reign on Earth.” Just as an aside - If the monks had made Dawn into something other than human (such as a lightbulb or bicycle pump), what would Glory have used?

good question, maybe if she was electric all she would have to do is plug her in???? or maybe open a door is she was an actual key….. i guess we’ll never really know

Glory’s not too bright, perhaps the stuff about the lightbulb and bicycle pump was just her babbling–perhaps, in her human form, she’s forgotten that the key would have to be in some kind of human or animal form.

Um… people. Glory said she found out that the ‘key to the key’ is Dawn’s blood. So that means she didn’t know BEFORE (when she didn’t know the key was human) so Glory could seriously believe that it was.. a lightbulb.
