During Pangs, Buffy and her friends were held under siege by the vengeful spirits of some Chumash Indians, forcing them to rethink the real meaning of Thanksgiving. Chumash was a real Indian tribe (though the tribe in Buffy is spelt Shumach in the script). The Chumash Indian homeland lay along the coast of California, between Malibu and Paso Robles. The “justice” of the Chumash is specifically to revisit the wrongs down to his people. So, he cuts off ears and. . . Xander contracts all of the lovely diseases spread to the Chumash people, including syphilis and small-pox, among others.
There are (at least) two later references to Xander’s Chumash-induced illnesses.
In 5.1 ‘Dracula’, after being made Dracula’s “manbitch,” Xander rants that he’s tired of being the one who gets the “funny syphilis.”
In the musical, Anya has a line, “his penis got diseases from a Chumah tribe.”

Does anyone know why that in the US (is FX international?) the channel FX always skips over this episode when they play the reruns. They are in chronilogical order and they always skip Pangs, its annoying. Is it because of the whole syphilis thing?

Abby M. - I just noticed the same thing! I couldn’t remember how Spike came to be staying at Giles house in “Something Blue”, because he had gotten away in “The Initiative”. Maybe they feel it is politically incorrect to show native americans.

Is it possible that FX skips it because the episode is “seasonal”. i.e., it coincides with Thanksgiving? Sometimes, shows put in syndication will not air holiday themed shows — like Christmas specials — simply because it seems strange to watch a show about Christmas or, in this case, Thanksgiving in the middle of July.

Maybe, I do remember for Valentine’s Day this year they showed Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered out of sync. I guess we’ll see if they’ll play it on the 24th!

Does FX ever skip or show out of sequence “Amends” (set on Christmas Eve)?

Come to think about it, they didn’t skip Amends last time around. I also know it’s not like they just made a mistake not airing Pangs because this is the second time they did that. Maybe your right somethingblue, they think its dissrespectful towards native americans. Thats stupid though, with all the stuff on TV they won’t show an episode of Buffy?
