In Lessons, manifest spirits haunt Buffy, Dawn and the others. A manifest spirit is like a ghost but is able to take a physical form such as (in this case) rotting dead bodies. Manifest spirits are raised from the grave using a talisman - made of bone, twigs, feathers and string. Buffy figures that by destroying the talisman she will send the manifest spirits back where they came from, so she asks Xander to do this. It’s unclear who summoned the spirits to Sunnydale High, and why. |

Yeah. Bit of a plot hole in the first episode. Not a good start. Kind of sums up season 7 - really good ideas, good premise, but you didn’t feel it was quite polished up enough.

Could Spike of done it? Was he under the control of The First that early in season 7?
Haven’t seen season 7 for ages!

He was kinda under the control but only to the extent of killing people when he heard that particular song. other times he was just insane.

If Spike did it that would explain why he knew so much about the manifest spirits.
Maybe he did it while ‘under the influence’, but didn’t realize he had when he was his usual, insane, self.

but the first could only manipulate him with the song and torture him, they couldn’t get him to do a spell.

It could have been bringers. I know it’s a stretch, but they work for the first, and very much capable of doing it.

I agree with superdino, this plothole in the first episode summed up Season 7. It really irked me they never followed up with who caused those spirits.

I think you’re supposed to believe it was Principal Wood that did it. Buffy’s suspicions about him throughout the episode and the unknown creator of the spirit charms seem to lead in that direction.
I bet it was the Bringers though, that seems very likely.

Curse you unfilled plot hole!

How could Joss do that to us? How could you!?! ***falls on knees, screams up at sky, a la Andrew*** Stay out of my brain!

I have to agree with ghola8 about Wood likely being the one who brought about these manifest spirits. In “First Date” he states that he “manuevered” Buffy into working at the high school, and I have assumed that he meant that he did it by putting Dawn in danger so that Buffy would want to keep an eye on the school.

Ohhhh! Your right, I completely forgot that Wood said that! Good call you guys.
