hey now, may be an oldie, but a goodie.
I do martial arts and we learn how to use both old weapons and new, and the older ones are more reliable, and handmade, which means there has been a lot of care and work gone into them.
maybe if you put a little symbol or something on the stake, the prof would respect it.

professor walsh may say this, but in the episode where spike escapes from the iniative, we see that the other two soldiers that capture the second vampire that escapes with spike have stakes and stake the vampire, and I’m pretty sure in one episode riley says to some soldiers to stake the vamp (this is before he begins using them)

Yeah, he says that in The Iniative: “Stake them if you have to” or something.
