Pop Goes The Weasel

In All the Way, Kaltenbach hums the tune of ‘Pop Goes The Weasel’. The rhyme has several versions, but the most well-known stanza goes:

Half a pound of tuppenny rice,
Half a pound of treacle.
That’s the way the money goes,
Pop goes the weasel.

The way I learned it when I was small was:

      “All around the mullberry bush,
      The monkey chased the weasel,
The monkey thought twas all in fun,
      POP! Goes the weasel.”

I certainly have no idea what it means, as I don’t think that monkeys, weasels, and mullberry bushes exist very often in the same parts of the world. Also, do weasels randomly explode?
