Workaholics

Whilst the episode All the Way was being filmed, the cast were simultaneously learning and recording their musical numbers for Once More, With Feeling, so the scenes of the exhausted Scoobies in the Magic Box are pretty realistic.

Amber Tamblyn

Amber played Dawn’s friend Janice Penshaw in the episode All the Way. Amber is best known as Joan in Joan of Arcadia, and has been in The Ring, Johnny Mysto: Boy Wizard, General Hospital (as Emily Quartermaine) and Live Nude Girls. Amber writes poetry and has been published in Cups and Poetry USA. She presented an award at the Grammy Awards in 2004 and has appeared on The Wayne Brady Show, The Sharon Osbourne Show, Late Show with David Letterman and Punk’d. Amber is the daughter of actor and dancer Russ Tamblyn, who appeared in Twin Peaks (as Dr. Jacoby), Ghost Dog, West Side Story (as Riff), Tom Thumb, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and Fame. Russ also acted alongside Amber in Joan of Arcadia and Johnny Mysto: Boy Wizard.

Charles Duckworth

Charles Duckworth, who played Glenn in All the Way (the vampire who says, “Excuse me! Can we fight now?”), can also be seen in Fat Albert, Thirteen, Cold Case and Wanda at Large.

Dave Power

Dave Power, who played Janice’s date Zack in All the Way, can also be seen in Latter Days, Frailty, Band of Brothers (as Private Dietrich), Malcolm in the Middle, One Tree Hill, ER, Boston Public, That ’70s Show and Becker.

John O’Leary

John O’Leary, who played one of the Watchers in Checkpoint, also appeared as ‘Kaltenbach’ in the season six Buffy episode All the Way.

Kavan Reece

Kavan Reece, who played Dawn’s vampire date Justin in All the Way, has also been in The Rules of Attraction, All About Us and That ’70s Show.

Steven Anthony Lawrence

Steven Anthony Lawrence, who played the kid harassing Xander in the Magic Box in All the Way, has also appeared in Cheaper by the Dozen, The Cat in the Hat, Shriek If You Know What I Did Last Friday the Thirteenth, My Favorite Martian, Frasier, ER, The Amanda Show, Sabrina, the Teenage Witch and Married… with Children. Steven played a mentally retarded boy in Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back (which features Eliza Dushku), but his scene was cut as it was deemed too offensive.

Janice Penshaw

Janice Penshaw was the rebellious friend of Dawn who sneaked out on a double date with Zack, Dawn and Justin at Halloween in All the Way. She was also mentioned by Dawn in the episodes Doublemeat Palace, Dead Things, Normal Again and Seeing Red.

Justin

Justin went on a date with Dawn, Janice and Zack. He was really a vampire and intended on making Dawn into a vampire. She kissed him, realised what he was and, eventually, staked him in All the Way.

Zack

Zack was a vampire who pretended to be a human when he went on a double date with Janice, Dawn and Justin. He and Justin planned to turn the two girls into vampires, but Zack was staked by Giles in All the Way.

Bell around the neck

In All the Way, Buffy is startled when she runs into Spike in the Magic Shop basement. She says, “Bell. Neck. Look into it.” In School Hard, Xander says the same thing about Angel, “Okay, that’s it. I’m puttin’ a collar with a little bell on that guy.” In Phases, Larry says to Xander, “Harris. Sheesh. Next time wear a bell.”

Burba weed

Spike says in All the Way that he likes to put burba weed in his blood to make it “all hot and spicy.” We heard in Hush that he likes to crumble up Weetabix in blood as it “gives it a little texture.” Whilst in his crypt in Dead Things, Spike puts some kind of herb in a glass of blood which could be burba weed.

Cleaning cover-up

We finally discover in All the Way why Giles spends a lot of his time cleaning his glasses: Buffy realises, “Is that why you’re always taking off your glasses? So you don’t have to watch what we’re doing?” to which Giles replies “Tell no one.”

Costuming fun

For Halloween in All the Way, Xander dresses as a pirate, Anya as a Charlie’s Angel and Giles as a wizard. Other costumes seen include: a fireman; a bee; the Queen of Hearts; three witches; a demon; a prisoner; Princess Leia and Luke Skywalker; a milkmaid; a gorilla; Flash Gordon; a 1920s ‘Flapper’ girl; Raggedy Ann; Cleopatra; a skeleton; a Mexican; a medieval princess; a hippie; a rock star and a slave.

Crass

In All the Way, Giles tells Buffy that the undead don’t usually come out on Halloween. She reminds him of the events of season two’s Halloween (”costumes that take you over”) and season four’s Fear, Itself (”wee little Irish fear-demony thingies”).

Go boom

In All the Way, Xander says, “Store. Go boom.” In Shadow, Willow said, “Tomb. Go boom” after Riley blew up a tomb in the graveyard.

It’s a loop

In All the Way, Buffy says, “Don’t blame me if we keep having this conversation over and over…” she’s referring to Life Serial in which she was placed in a time flux by the nerds. In Bring on the Night, Xander says, “It’s a loop… like the Mummy hand.”

Klepto Dawn

After her mother died, Dawn started stealing things to try and get attention. She took some of Anya’s earrings in Intervention, a necklace in All the Way and an amulet in Once More, With Feeling. She told Justin in All the Way that “I haven’t paid for lipstick since forever” and in Older and Far Away she stole a leather jacket for Buffy’s birthday. Dawn’s kleptomania was discovered in Older and Far Away when Anya found stolen jewellry in Dawn’s room. In Normal Again, Buffy tells Dawn she has to try harder and stop stealing things.

Lipstick larceny

In Becoming (Part 1), Buffy is seen in a flashback saying to her new Watcher, “I meant to pay for that lipstick.” In All the Way, Dawn says to the vampire Justin, “I haven’t paid for lipstick since forever.”

Remedial Magic

When Willow is arguing with the lady who’s dressed as a stereotypical witch in All the Way, she’s holding up a purple book called Remedial Magic.

That old trick

Both Dawn and Janice tell their families in Life Serial that they are staying at each others’ houses. Buffy should have checked with Janice’s mother as she and her friends did this in Surprise when researching the Judge.

Xander’s patch

Xander wears an eye patch when he is dressed as a pirate in All the Way. Xander’s eye was removed by Caleb in season seven’s Dirty Girls and he then had to wear an eye patch. He even references the costume when he’s in hospital in Empty Places: “Well, to go with the eye patch, to really complete the look. I think I still have that costume from Hallowe’en.”

Halloween

Halloween gets its name from the Catholic celebration of All Hallow’s Eve, a day when all the saints, not just those with their own feast day, were honoured. Its real origins go back much further, to the ancient festival of Samhain, the Celtic new year. On that day it was believed that the boundaries between the worlds of the living and dead were weakened. Thus spirits were able to cause trouble on earth, and humans to gain otherworldly knowledge. According to Giles, Halloween is traditionally a quiet night for undead activity as they think it’s corny. Halloween is celebrated in the Buffy episodes Halloween, Fear Itself and All the Way.

Lethe’s Bramble

In All the Way, Willow uses Lethe’s Bramble to perform a forgetting spell on Tara (and herself and her friends, by accident, in Tabula Rasa). Tara discovered what Willow had done in Once More, With Feeling when she researched Lethe’s Bramble in a book at the Magic Box. It said: “Lethe’s Bramble: Used for augmenting spells of forgetting and mind control”.

Mandrake root

In All the Way, Buffy is sent by Anya to get some mandrake root. It is a traditional magical ingredient which is said to look like a person, and would scream when pulled from the ground. Spike says mandrake root should be kept three to a jar to avoid cramping.

Charlie Brown

Willow and Xander have a Christmas tradition of watching A Charlie Brown Christmas together. This was first mentioned in Passion. The cartoon features the Snoopy Dance, which is something we see Xander do in The Replacement.
In All the Way, Spike says, “Great Pumpkin’s on in twenty.” He’s referring to Charles Schultz’s animated Peanuts Halloween special It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown.

Fantasia

The animated movie Fantasia has been mentioned twice in Buffy. In Fear, Itself, Xander brings home Phantasm from the video shop but discovers he’s been given Fantasia instead. In All the Way, the Scoobies discuss cleaning the Magic Shop. Willow says, “I could whip up a jaunty self-cleaning incantation, it’ll be like Fantasia.” The movie was made in 1940 and features Mickey Mouse in dramatic animated sequences to classical music.

Farrah Fawcett

In The Witch, Buffy says, “Mom, I’ve accepted that you’ve had sex. I am not ready to know that you had Farrah hair.” She’s referring to the star of the TV show Charlie’s Angels, Farrah Fawcett, whose flicked out hair became popular in the 1970s. In All the Way, Anya dressed as Farrah in Charlie’s Angels for Halloween, but was confused as she thought her name was Charlie (”I’m an Angel. We look sexy rollerskating and have cool hair. My name is Charlie”).

Firefly

In All the Way, Xander gives children sweets at the Magic Box. He says, “These be fireflies spat from a volcano off the coast of Katmandu.” This may be a nod towards Joss Whedon’s TV show Firefly.

Henry V

In The Gift, Giles says, “We few… we happy few…” to which Spike replies, “We band ‘o buggered”, paraphrasing the famous “St. Crispin’s Day” speech in Shakespeare’s Henry V. The actual quote is, “We few, we happy few. We band of brothers.” In All the Way, Xander misquotes Henry V, “So, one more into the breach?” The line is actually “Once more unto the breach”.

Indiana Jones

Warren calls Jonathan “Short Round” in Conversations with Dead People and Entropy. He was Indiana Jones’ partner, played by Jonathan Ke Quan, in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. In All the Way, Zach says to Janice, “Pumpkins, very dangerous, you go first”. This is a reference to Raiders of the Lost Ark in which Indiana Jones sees snakes in his way. His friend Salla says “Asps, very dangerous, you go first”.
In Awakening, Angel says, “Wood. Why did it have to be wood?” after he sets off the booby trap. This is a paraphrase of Indiana Jones’s famous line “Snakes. Why did it have to be snakes?” from the 1981 film Raiders of the Lost Ark. Much of the action in Angel’s fantasy in Awakening is inspired by Indiana Jones movies. In Soulless, Angelus says to Wesley, “Here’s one for you. What’s the deal with Angel and Raiders of the Lost Ark?”

Moby Dick

Xander dresses as a pirate in All the Way. Giles calls him “Ahab” after the captain in the novel Moby Dick by Herman Melville. In Deep Down, Gunn says that Wesley has “been playing a little Ahab”.

Pop Goes The Weasel

In All the Way, Kaltenbach hums the tune of ‘Pop Goes The Weasel’. The rhyme has several versions, but the most well-known stanza goes:

Star Wars

George Lucas’s Star Wars films are a cult phenomenon. They are referenced numerous times in the Buffyverse. The original trilogy included the movies Star Wars (1977), The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Return Of The Jedi (1983) and the movies The Phantom Menace (1999), Attack of the Clones (2002) and Revenge of the Sith (2005) were made later on.

• In When She Was Bad, when Xander and Willow play Guess the Movie from the tag line (Willow: “Use the Force, Luke.”,
  Xander: “Do I even have to dignify that with a guess?”)
• In School Hard, Spike told Angel that, “You were my Yoda!” Yoda was the ancient Jedi master who became the mentor and teacher for both Obi-Wan Kenobi and Luke Skywalker.
• A visual reference to Star Wars can be seen in The Zeppo, when Xander runs into the corridor and runs back out with the gang members chasing him. Han Solo does the same thing in Star Wars.
• In Choices, Buffy says that Faith has turned to ‘the dark side’.
• In The Freshman, Xander confuses the Star Wars Jedi code quoted by Yoda in The Phantom Menace. (”Hate leads to anger…no wait…Fear leads to hate, hate leads to the dark side”). Also in that episode, the old frat house that the vampires are holed up in is the Psi Theta house. If you write those two greek letters together, and pronounce them together, you get Sith.
• In Fear, Itself, Xander says to Oz, “Sensing a disturbance in the Force, Master?”
• Buffy using the chain to choke Sobek the snake-demon in Shadow is reminiscent of Princess Leia killing Jabba the Hutt in Return of the Jedi.
• In Forever, Ben calls Glory’s minions “Jawa rejects” after the small hooded and robed creatures in Star Wars.
• In Life Serial, Andrew paints a Death Star from Star Wars on the side of the gang’s van. It’s the Empire’s revised design from Return of the Jedi, which Jonathan says is flawed.
• In the episode Two To Go, Andrew says, “We’ve got maybe seconds before Darth Rosenberg grinds us all into to Jawa burgers and not one of you bunch has the Midichlorians to stop her.” These are all Star Wars references: Darth is a title given to a Sith Warrior (such as Darth Vader); Jawas are the hooded creatures who live on Tatooine, and Midichlorians are micro-organisms which exist in all living things. Andrew says, “Laugh it up, Fuzzball” which is a quote from Star Wars. Andrew also later says in Two To Go, “…in a galaxy far, far away” - yet another Star Wars reference.
• In All the Way, Tara and Willow see a couple dressed as Princess Leia and Luke Skywalker kissing in the Bronze. Willow asks, “Do they know they’re brother and sister?”
• In Smashed, we see that the three nerds own a mint condition (though out of its packaging) 1979 Boba Fett action figure. Though Boba Fett was first introduced in The Empire Strikes Back (made in 1980), the earliest Boba Fett figure was made in 1979, before the film was released.
• In Dead Things, Jonathan and Andrew play fight with green light sabres.
• In Entropy, Warren calls Jonathan “Padawan”.
• In Conversations with Dead People, Jonathan and Warren have the following conversation: Warren: “Come on, “If you strike me down…” Andrew: “I shall become more powerful than you could possibly imagine…That boy is our last hope.” Warren: “No, there is another.” These are all quotes from Star Wars.
• In Potential, Xander says to Andrew, “Say Skywalker, and I smack you.” He is, of course, referring to Star Wars‘ Luke Skywalker.
• In Showtime, Andrew says, “I’m bored. Episode I bored.” He’s referring to George Lucas’s disappointing movie Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace.
• In Never Leave Me, Warren/The First says, “I’m like Obi Wan”. He also says to Andrew, “We’re right in the trench, and the exhaust port’s in sight.” This is a reference to the scene in Star Wars in which the Death Star is under attack.
• In Bring on the Night, Andrew says, “I’m like Vader in the last 5 minutes of Jedi with redemptive powers minus a redemptive struggle of epic redemption which chronicles…” He’s referring to the last scenes of the final Star Wars movie Return of the Jedi.
• In Storyteller, there are two framed Star Wars comics on the wall in Andrew’s opening scene.
• In Dirty Girls, Andrew says, “But like so many tragic heroes, Faith was seduced by the lure of the dark side.”

The Terminator

The conversation in Living Conditions about Parker’s interest in Buffy, (Xander says “Hasta” and “Buffinator” and Oz says “He’ll be back”) is a reference to The Terminator movies, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and directed by Jame Cameron.
In This Year’s Girl, Buffy called Adam “the Terminator without the bashful charm” and in When She Was Bad, Willow and Xander referenced the movie when playing “Guess the Movie”. In Primeval, Adam has an arm-gun (”I’ve been upgrading”). This is reminiscent of the gun the Terminator has in the movie trilogy. In All the Way, Janice calls her mother “The Mominator”.
In Billy, Cordelia says, “You can’t barge into a police precinct and go all Terminator.” At one point in the original Terminator movie, Arnold Schwarzenegger’s character drives into a police station and shoots up the place killing most of the police inside.

Treasure Island

After her first kiss in All the Way, Dawn says, “Shiver me timbers”. This is a quote from Robert Louis Stevenson’s 1881 novel Treasure Island, and was also used in a 1934 Popeye cartoon going by the same name. Dawn originally heard the phrase from Anya, who said:

Here, Anya is hinting at the (most likely adult) game she will be playing with Xander later, while he’s dressed as a pirate.

Buffy tells Xander that she was only out of commission for 3 months. In After Life, Spike tells Buffy she was dead for 147 days - which is about 5 months.

Surely Dawn would have felt how cold Justin was when she kissed him? Perhaps she was too excited as it was her first kiss?

When Giles fights the vampire after finding Janice, you can see his stunt double clearly.

Spike’s stunt double can be seen in the big fight with the vampires.

Buffy’s stunt double can be clearly seen when she fights the vampire near the car.

When Buffy is fighting a vampire, they smash the window of a car. You can see that the glass breaks a second before it is hit. You may need to pause your DVD to see this one.
