In Potential, Buffy traps the power-less potential Slayers in a crypt with a vampire, despite the fact that she strongly disapproved when the Watcher’s Council performed a similar test on her in Helpless.
Also, Buffy’s entire attitude about being the slayer changed dramatically. In season 3 she totally disagreed with Faith about the slayer being the law, but in season 7 she said, “I am the law.”
There’s alot of differences between the Council’s stupid test and when Buffy trapped the potentials in the crypt with the vampire:
- Firstly, the most obvious one is what ILoveFreddiePrinzeJr said, there was one of her and there’s four of them.
- Secondly, the conditions for her to do the test was that she face the vampire without her powers, and weaponless. But each of the potentials are armed, and have untapped Slayer power which they can use to their advantage, something Buffy points out to them in the beginning of the episode.
- Thirdly, all their training means crap all if they don’t actually get the feel of facing a real vampire (Spike only counts so much, as he doesn’t want to actually kill them).
- And fourth, there’s no way Buffy would have done it if she thought they couldn’t kill the vampire. She’s not going to leave them to die.
In conclusion, the Council’s test was really unfair and kinda pointless, whereas Buffy’s actually trying to teach the girls something with her test.

Maybe she thought that this test was appropriate because she was a better person after facing Kralik. But then again, probably not.
