Silent Sarah (and Alyson)

Please note: This trivia was suggested by slightlyembarrased. It has not been approved.

This isn’t so much “trivia” as it is an observation, and a request for comment: Have any of you noticed that in the entire seven season DVD set of the show, neither Sarah Michelle Gellar not Allyson Hannigan contribued in the form of an episode commentary or in any of the interviews provided in the DVDs many “featurettes”? Now, was this snobbery on their respective parts? Or was it something that their respective agents/managers recommended against them doing in order to distance themselves from the show, as to better their chances of landing other “non-Joss Whedon- produced” roles? Have any of your read anything in the various trade publications or website to explain their very noticable absence from the DVD commentaries? I mean, hell, even Seth Green did commentaries for a couple episodes, and his career is arguably bigger (or as big) as either Gellar’s or Hannigan’s.

I’m very curious to hear your opinions….(I really need to get a life…)

Was SMG actually in that much of the commentary or interviews or anything for any of the seasons?? I don’t remember seeing her in any of them and if she was, it wasn’t that much. (I’m not sure about season 6.) Same with Alyson Hannigan.

    2. lins11 says:

Sarah has never done any extras - like commentarties - for the dvd’s…this was due to her working schedule. She did take part in “Buffy:Television With Bite” which celebrated the whole series and was shown in the UK the night before Chosen was shown but I have also seen it on E. She also did interviews for Sky One in the Uk, where they were on set with her while filming “As You Were” but she kept being called away for scenes.

I’m sure that Television With Bite is on my DVD extra but that is the only thing that Sarah was on.

She did have Joss back her up and say that it was because of filming that she couldn’t do any commentaries.

Alyson is also in Television With Bite..bt doesn’t have as much screen time. Was a really good hour long show and worth seeing! They brought in David Boreanaz,Charisma Carpenter as well as all of the Buffy regulars

    3. MagicBone says:

Television w/ Bite is on a dvd?? which one, season 7 or something?

    4. slightlyembarrased says:

Television with a Bite is an extra on the final DVD (I believe) of the Season Seven compilation. And, no, SMG nor AH did a single commentary or interview made specially for the DVD sets. It seems though, based on lins11 post, that they had good reason for not doing so. I’m glad to hear that, as it really would have been a shame if their failure to participate was born out of some sense of superiority or a career choice made to distance themselves from the series for fear of type casting or simply never being able to shake the roles that brought them their noteriety.

    5. slightlyembarrased says:

Turns out, Television with a Bite is actually on the last disc of the Season SIX (not Seven, as I had previously posted) DVD collection. Sorry if I sent you in the wrong direction, MagicBone (very difficult to type “MagicBone” and not laugh to yourself….)

    6. MagicBone says:

There’s a thing on the 3rd disc of season six that like the Sciences and Arts Television Panel that they did w/ Buffy and Alyson Hannigan is on it but SMG isn’t.

    7. lilyme says:

Isn’t Nicky the only member of the main cast who can be heard on a commentary for an episode (7x18 “Dirty Girls”)?

    8. tadpole says:

Good point, lilyme. As far as I can remember, neither SMG, Alyson, Tony, Michelle, nor Emma have ever done commentaries. James and D.B. contributed to ‘Lies My Parents Told Me.’ Even Tom Lenk and Danny Strong contributed to ‘Conversations With Dead People.”

Why are the commentaries done almost exclusively by the writers and directors [not that they’re bad; I love hearing the structure perspective from the writers, especially Jane; yay Jane E.]

    9. tadpole says:

I’m a total commentary addict/geek. Maybe this should be a forum question, but here goes:

Whose commentary would you like to hear on which episode?

      I’ll start. Alyson on ‘Doppelgangland’.

    10. snowflake5684 says:

      Emma on “Selfless.”

    11. cardboardy says:

I can’t remember, were SMG and AH briefly on the featurette for OMWF?
      Can’t remember.
But anyway, while I wish there were more cast options for the DVD commentaries (and commentaries for every episode, while I’m wishlisting), it’s hard to imagine the intensity of working 14 and 16 hour days for years and years making a TV show like BtVS.
I reckon SMG and all the others gave us HEAPS of material to adore them for! about them.

    12. cardboardy says:

oh yeah and I also meant to say,
Tony and Kristine on “Band Candy” !

    13. Abby M. says:

Oh, nice one cardboardy! I would say Robia, Anthony, and Joss on “Passion” and another would be David and Sarah on Becoming parts 1 and 2 (notice how I just assumed a first name basis?).

    14. becsug says:

When it comes to commentaries in general (for any film or show), the cast versions are often less interesting than those of crew. I agree it’s nice to have actor input, but or the most part I’m grateful that the balance is more heavily in favour of writers and directors. My name won’t be appearing on the ‘We want Michelle Trachtenburg to do a commentary for Real Me petition. Also, just look what happens when they give the actors an audience and microphones!

    15. tadpole says:

So cynical, becsug (but probably quite right).
