The school paper is called the Sunnydale High Sentinel, seen in Earshot. It has an obituary section (which Oz likes to read) and Cordelia checks it out for comments on the cheerleaders. The editor is Freddie Iverson. |

I had the impression that “I go straight to the obituaries” was some Oz humor, since this is a high school newspaper they’re talking about, and they don’t have obits. But then again, this is Sunnydale High School with the high mortality rate, as noted a few times in the series, so maybe it really is a straight line after all–rare from Oz.

Yeah, I thought it was a joke, too…

I honestly assumed that Oz was serious, since this school has the special circumstances of having so much of its student body killed off. It could be a joke, however.

Reading the obituaries first is a convention of sorts, but I’m not sure to whom it refers. I know that my grandmother joked about irish catholics doing that, but I don’t know how prevalent it is (either as a practice or as a joke)

I like to read the obits. And the arrest column. Sometimes the horoscope part too, but usually the newspaper is boring … and depressing. Which I guess is strange coming from the chick who reads the obituaries first.
But that was funny. Classic(ish) Oz. I thought he was serious, but in a humorous way.
