Joss’s school life

Joss Whedon attended high school at (the ultra-posh) Winchester College in Hampshire, England where he took his A levels. An internet rumour states that the character of Giles was based on one of the college’s history teachers, Dr. Peter Cramer. This has never been confirmed.
The school is as far removed from Sunnydale High as you can imagine, being an exclusive boarding school for boys and not situated in a town infested with vampires. Other Winchester College alumni include author Anthony Trollope and comedian Tim Brooke-Taylor.
Joss Whedon has said of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and high school:

What makes the show popular is the central myth of high school as horrific…The humiliation, the alienation…the confusion of high school is taken to such great proportions that they become demonic…I don’t think you ever get over high school.

Which would make Joss Whedon a “Wykehamist”…which I always thought sounded semi-mystical, even though it’s not. (It’s what Winchester alumni are called)

    2. Jess says:

Hi Red - just wondering what your Winchester connection is? I went to King Alfred’s College a few years back.
