Joss Whedon told Dreamwatch magazine about an edited scene in the episode Chosen: “I definitely had to do some hack and slash. They were small edits. My favourite one would probably never have made it to air anyway. It was Principal Wood and Giles sharing a joint right before they go into battle, or as I referred to it in the script, a hand-rolled cigarette. That was shot and not aired. Tony sort of went through a thing with it. He has daughters and he talked with his girlfriend, and then he decided ‘Oh, what the hell, this is funny.’ We did a version with tiny airport bottles of whiskey, but we did one version with the joint.” |

Much as I would have liked seeing Giles smoking a joint, I am a firm believer in the comic potential of “tiny airport bottles of whiskey”. Come on! What’s not to like? They look like regular bottles of whiskey, only much, much smaller. Outrageous!

They finally used the tiny bottles in Angel (twice, I think). Gotta agree with hailtothechimp about the comic potential.
The scene with Wood and Giles should have appeared on the DVD.

Yep Spike is drinking lots of tiny bottles of JD i believe, holding them away saying they looked like a normal bottle but reaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaallly small.
God Bless Spike.

It would have been awesome to include this scene on the DVD! Does anyone know why he didn’t? He could have gotten away with it.

Nearly every episode commentary mentions a scene that was regretfully cut; it does seem odd that none of those scenes are on the discs.

Actually, even though seeing Giles smoke a “hand-rolled cigarette” would be funny, after thinking about it, I’m glad Joss didn’t include that. Seeing Giles smoking a joint on the show would have been weird. We all know Giles changed drastically from Welcome to the Hellmouth, but that would have been kinda dissappointing (I’m skittish about the use of drugs and the whatnot).

I agree, as I would not want to influence kids today since there are already enough other things to influence, but it would have been totally in character for Giles to have lit up with Wood, because, as we saw in “The Dark Age” Season 2, ep 8, he clearly had a wild and dark past, with dark magic, rock n’ roll and rebellion. Additionally, in “Band Candy”, which was such a cool episode by the way (and made me love Joyce), he clearly was exhibiting wild, rebellious (ok, I’m gonna say it, “stoner”) traits. Hope I haven’t offended anyone!

I agree, mostly. Him being a stoner/druggy when he was rebelling, no doubt. But him lighting up at the age of what, 46-47 before battle after all he went through, I just can’t see it. After seeing “The Dark Age” and “Band Candy”, I get the feeling he would want to surpress his dark side even more: It only hurt the ones he loved. So I don’t think you offened anybody, but I can see him with airport whiskey, just not a joint.

Very valid point! I just watched “First Date” again last night (I only own season seven, so I just keep watching those episodes - very pathetic, I know!) and Giles is so hard on everyone, there really is no way he would let his guard down so much during those stressful times.

I don’t know about you, but since these people where both athourity figures employed (at one point or another) as teachers in the school system, I wouldn’t have wanted to see them consuming drugs. It’s just too weird-unless they’ve been eating bandcandy, I think the adults should be adults.

Sharing a joint in times of high stress does not make one a druggy/stoner and would have not been out of character for Giles. We’ve seen him get wasted on Scotch. How is that any better as far as being a bad role model and influencing the kids today?

I guess because (how Buffy put it), he’s sort of the ‘funny drunk.’ He usually only drinks when he is freaking out or he’s stressed(The Dark Age, The Yoko Factor). I guess the difference is that (at least in the US), smoking weed is illegal, but you only have to be 21 to drink. So Giles is old enough to drink but for him to do something illegal like that would be out of character in my opinion.

Here’s a thought. I’m a qualified librarian - I have a degree in the subject. I spent my twenties smoking hash, grass, and whatever, eating all sorts of lysergic substances, experimenting with all sorts of sulphates, and the reason I stopped doing all that stuff is not because it was illegal, or because it was bad for me, or because I cared what anybody thought, but simply because I ran out of the free time in which to partake of such indulgences.
Giles is clearly not a character who has any particular interest in the niceties of the law beyond the simple laws of morality and decency. He would be totally experienced with the Wiccan rede - do what thou wilt, according to thyself. That is - please yourself, don’t hurt others. If Giles felt he wanted a spliff, or a line of cocaine, he would simply have had one.
Therefore, I think for him and Robin to have had a big fat joint at the end of days would have been entirely appropriate.
Me - I’d have gone for a couple of blotters of black star acid (and a position outside the school inside an M1A1 Abrams equipped with a flamethrower). Fireworks!

Man, I wrote out this whole post and then realised that I was completely against everything I wrote. Damn.
I’m glad they didn’t show this scene. I don’t think it would have been good, and in my opinion it’s out of character for Giles.
Tiny bottles of alcohol, however, could not be more hilarious.
And just because why not:
SPIKE: Can’t even get drunk. Why would anyone ever make a bottle this small? It’s inhuman.
SPIKE: It’s like a bloody tease.
It’s like, “Here’s what a bottle of Jack would look like if you actually had one,” or, “here’s a drink, but it’s very far away.”
ANGEL: What does that mean? Really?
SPIKE: It’s a play on perspective.
ANGEL: Huh. Really can’t get drunk off these things.
SPIKE: Not us, anyway. Vampire constitution. Not always a plus. How did you know?
ANGEL: Drank a lot of ‘em, and I still don’t like you.

I don’t know how I would feel about Giles smoking a joint … I just ended my whole hugs not drugs kick but still, it’s Giles. We’ve only seen him drink a little, when he was really stressed or super freaked (The Dark Age, Something Blue, etc) but before the whole giant apocalyptic battle … hmm. But how would they have any time? The ubervamps and bringers and everything kinda started escaping right after the whole going-into-the-hellmouth thing.

erm Giles doing drugs wouldn’t be wholly inapropriate as he has commited other crimes, such as murder (ben) and hey if the worlds gonna end it wouldn’t be condoned but if your going to dye anyway, why not try things for once!

I think it would be a great scene. I don’t think that it would be out of Giles’ character. I saw a music video which mainly concentrated on Giles and the music was Daddy Cool (from Boney M). Because he is a daddy cool. :)
Especially since season 3. When Wesley arrived and Giles had to face that Wes acting like a butt-monkey and they have some similarities in them, Giles became so much different. He was way cooler from then.
And yes, we didn’t see him drink a lot, but I agree with mairceridwen that “Sharing a joint in times of high stress does not make one a druggy/stoner”.
So I think that would be a great scene fitting to those events that happened before. Altough he is the smartest and oldest (I don’t count Spike of course) in the group, he fight like the younger one’s and in my opinion he don’t feel like that he is older than them. This is what I find fantastic about Giles’ character.
I’ve always saw Giles in this way, and I know that many of the fans don’t agree with me, but this is just my stupid, pathetic opinion… :)
July 18th, 2006 at 6:22 pm
And, we saw him smoking in Band Candy. Okay, that was just cigarette but there isn’t THAT much difference between a joint and a cigarette….
(trust me) :)
July 18th, 2006 at 10:13 pm
I don’t know, I guess I’m weird about things like that but Giles and Wood sharing a joint would have been funny but on the other hand, there is a difference between getting wasted on beer and smoking an illegal drug.
July 19th, 2006 at 12:28 pm
The effects are almost the same. Only the legal/illegal thing is different. And drinking and get drunk is as harmful as smoking.
But I can understand everything you all said about the theme, I do. :) :)
