You’ve never met the real me

In Never Leave Me, Spike tells Buffy, “You’ve never met the real me.” If he’s refering to his former evil-ways, wouldn’t she have “met” the real him in seasons 2-4?

Maybe he meant the real him before he became a vampire

I’ve always thought that this is simply a bad, careless line, as Buffy really did meet the “real” Spike in Season Two when he was both evil and free to kill (without a chip in his head.) At least that’s my opinion.

I agree with b’please..I think he is simply saying (as he demonstrates when he explains how much blood you can drink and still leave enough so that you victim continues to cry and scream) that Buffy never saw Spike at his most depraved. She had never witnessed him torture one of his victims. Likewise, it has been suggested (by Spike) that Buffy had a humanizing effect on him from the first time he saw her, and that, in effect, he has never been as ruthless and vicious since then.

I think that we all have aspects of our personality that we bury deep down. We think things & hope for things that we shouldn’t, but sometimes these things are too dark to share with anybody - even the people closest to you.
Just as people can see you going through your life every single day for years on end & still not know what exactly is going on below what is visible, Buffy would never know just how vicious Spike could be.
We’re all far uglier where nobody can see.
