Kendra was chosen as a vampire Slayer when Buffy died briefly in Prophecy Girl. The two Slayers had different styles - Kendra was considered a model Slayer as she had been training with her watcher Sam Zabuto since she was tiny. She and Giles hit it off straight away, much to Buffy’s annoyance. Buffy eventually taught Kendra that human emotion wasn’t necessarily a hindrance to being a Slayer and the two began to respect each other. Kendra presented Buffy with Mr. Pointy - her favourite stake, as well as the sword which Buffy would eventually use to kill Angel with. Kendra was killed by Drusilla whilst trying to protect the other Scoobies. Dru hypnotised her then slashed her throat. Her death led to Faith being chosen as a vampire Slayer. I’ve always wondered about this — if a Slayer isn’t called until the previous one dies, then Kendra, like Buffy, should have been in HS when she was called. How, then, could she have been practising since she was a little girl, and how would her parents have known to send her away when she was a baby to essentially be raised by her Watcher?

I’m sure she was a potential. Since being a slayer was a great honor in her culture, they were probably more hip to the whole potential thing… Weren’t some of the potentials in season 7 assigned to watchers? In any case, did they ever explain how one is recognized as a potential.

Well, I guess this makes as much sense as anything! But doesn’t that beg the question that Buffy should have known that she was a potential, instead of being caught completely off guard?

She could have been a potential at the time Merrick met her. and then just before her first dusting she became the slayer. either that or it just wouldn’t have been as dramatic. if she knew she would become the slayer that wouldn’t have been as interesting.

Like I said, Kendra’s culture, hip to the whole potential thing. Buffy’s not so much. Maybe they missed buffy as a potential until the last minute. Or perhaps they were watching her, noticed that she wouldn’t take to the whole potential thing well again since her culture (sunny california cheerleading) wasn’t as hip to the whole slayer thing to begin with. And then once she was chosen…well they’d better let her know lest the vampires take over.

Has anyone else ever wondered why another Slayer wasn’t called when Buffy died at the end of Season 5… I know that they already had Faith but they already Buffy when Kendra was killed… was this Slayer just never found???

Rozzi - this has been discussed numerous times, most recently here.

Okay, I have some very strong oppinions on Kendra. First off, why does this Slayer who’s been trained all her life to kill, and has never even talked to a boy dress like a cross between Cordelia and I dream of Jeanie, with too much makeup and gold hoop earings? Second, why does she speak English, and for goodness sake, what’s with that hair??? Did her watcher teach her to dress that way? Because something tells me she doesn’t subscribe to Cosmo.

I’m sure she was taught to learn English in case she would have to work by the Hellmouth, which is in California. Perhaps her Watcher dressed her to “blend in” with the sexy ladies of Southern California.

My theory is Kendra had to learn English, her Watcher is part of the counsel base in England. It’s a given and a great excuse to eliminate subtitle. Did they every say where she was actually from? Last, I agree with Smash as far as clothing. Also her accent was just sickening. Worse than Jar-Jar. My heritage is both Carribean and African and the accent is just aweful.

I started to like her in The becoming part 1 and then she died… lol the tragedy…
but mairceridwen she didnt blend in with her clothes because when her shirt was ruined she said : hey thats me favourite shirt, thats me only shirt… or something like that… its sad that she had only one shirt :P

Me too, I didn’t like her to much in What’s My Line Part 1/2, but she was growing on me and by the time I saw her in Becoming, I was happy. Then she died…thank you Joss…

LOL yeah Joss always does these things…
when you care for a character you must know that Joss will make them or evil or dead

“but mairceridwen she didnt blend in with her clothes because when her shirt was ruined she said : hey thats me favourite shirt, thats me only shirt… or something like that… its sad that she had only one shirt :P ”
Okay, that comment makes absolutely no sense.
My point was not that she did blend in, but that her watcher thought she needed a “trendy” outfit to blend in. She only brought what she wore. I’m sure she had more shirts at home, so it’s not that tragic.

what ticks me off is that if she had more clothes… why didnt she brought it with her? she had only one costume!
and she then gets a shirt from Buffy…
is she that cheap that she doesnt have a wardrobe on her own?
November 30th, 2005 at 4:26 pm
She snuck onto a plane, maybe they thought bringing a bad wouldn’t be stealthy enough. Personally, I have no problem with only wearing one outfit…what I do have a problem with is the fact that she didn’t bring a toothbrush.
November 30th, 2005 at 4:36 pm
A point later brought up as Dawn explains to Buffy that she stole a toothbrush because “dental hygenie is important.”…

I read in a book somewhere, I think it was Pretty Maids All In A Row, that’s a Spike and Dru one, that the Watchers Council did a kind of locater spell to pinpoint the potential slayers, like the one that Willow did. I know that because it wasn’t in the show it doesn’t actually make it real but hey, it’s somethng.
