Third Slayer

So, Buffy dies at the end of the fifth season. Shouldn’t there have been yet another slayer called, because in the seventh season they mention that when she dies a new slayer is to be called. What happened to the slayer that should have been put into effect the few months she was gone?

    1. rhetorica says:

Another slayer would only be called, once Faith dies. After Buffy’s initial death (at the hands of the Master), Kendra was called. When Drusilla killed Kendra, Faith was called. And so it goes.

    2. Cassie says:

Basically, Buffy only had the power to call one slayer… I guess the second death doesn’t count.

    3. Blondie-Bear says:

Firstly, just because we don’t see another slayer, doesn’t mean another hasn’t been called. I mean, how many people are there in the world? Even the council couldn’t keep track of them all.

Secondly, Buffy died an unnatural death at the end of The Gift, which is the reason she was able to be resurrected. The unnatural death factor may have interfered with the slayer line.

Thirdly, well, there is no thirdly, it just seemed like I needed to say it:-)

    4. mairceridwen says:

Thirdly is a good word and woefully underused. How do we know whether the council could keep track of them. It seems to me they did a good job of it–was there ever a story of a slayer gone unnoticed?

    5. Abby M. says:

Well, the scoobies tried to keep Buffy’s death quiet so maybe because no one informed the council or whoever, no one ever went to look for the 3rd slayer. It’s possible another girl did get the powers and have them even before the events of Chosen and no one knew to seek her out.

    6. mairceridwen says:

It seems, however, that she would have shown up in season seven when they were rounding up all the potentials.

    7. ant4buffy says:

rhetorica is right on this one. Buffy was just a girl with superpowers after the first season. She just called herself a slayer

    8. Mel says:

Buffy was still a slayer, whether she was the only one or not.

If she was just a girl with superpowers who called herself a slayer then why did the Watcher’s Council make her do the Crucimentium? Or why did they come to Sunnydale in Checkpoint - they needed Buffy, without her there was no-one who could defeat Glory and all the other Big Bads that turned up.

    9. ant4buffy says:

Oh yeh. i didn’t clarify myself well. i just meant that Buffy was no longer able to activate the next slayer. i was wrong about the just a girl thing

This issue has already been discussed at length on the site. Have a look here for details if you’re interested:

The way I see it, Faith inherited the “Slayer Line” from Kendra, who inherited it from Buffy. So a new slayer would only have been called when Faith died.

This is all moot now I guess with the events of Season 7 and the slayerising of all potentials!

    11. ildjarn says:

The slayer line went on to Kendra, and then to Faith. So Buffy wasn’t a slayer anymore, which means there didn’t need to be a new slayer when she died.

I always thought that the slayer line had moved onto Faith and that was why a new slayer wasn’t called when Buffy died the second time.

However, I’m sure there were references in season 7, possibly by Caleb about ‘none of these girls will ever know power unless you die’ or something, so surely he was referring to a new slayer being activated once Buffy died? So whats the deal?

    13. mairceridwen says:

      Perhaps Caleb is mistaken.

“So Buffy wasn’t a slayer anymore”

She’s still a slayer. She’s still has slayer strength and Dracula still knows her as a slayer, in a “I can sense your darkness” way not just by reputation. The scoobies call on the power of the original slayer at the end of season four to create the super buffy

I have a hard time believing this could be possible if she wasn’t a slayer. She’s still connected to the power of the slayer, even if she’s not connected to the line of succession.

I wonder if Buffy had died and not been able to come back that the council had plans to bump of Faith so they had a “good” slayer.

Also way back up at Blondie-Bear I think that there would have been a lot of unnatural deaths in the slayer line it shouldnt have stopped it.

    15. tienkou says:

The way I see it (now that its over) Caleb and the First knew Buffy’s existence was clogging up the pipes. Allowing the evil to come to the surface (I know bad example) That’s why they didn’t really want her dead yet. Remember they kept saying it wasn’t time for her to die. If she died the balance would have been restored and they would have had to withdraw. Such are the laws of the Buffy Universe (and plumbing). No other slayers could be called unless both Faith and Buffy died. If Faith died another Slayer would be called but Buffy was still clogging things up and throwing everything off balance. Why did they stop, I miss Buffy :(
