Kendra’s potential

Please note: This trivia was suggested by cardboardy. It has not been approved.

In What’s My Line, Part Two, Kendra and Buffy finally start communicating with each other, while preparing for a big fight. Kendra talks about how her parents gave her over to her Watcher when she was a very small child, because her people take ‘the calling’ very seriously.
What ‘calling’ is Kendra referring to? She speaks as though the Slayer calling is similar to the Watcher calling, that is, something one is raised into from birth. This is at odds with much of the other Slayer mythology in BtVS. We are told many times that only when a Slayer is killed is a new one called. The ‘Potentials’ weren’t mobilised until season 7, and that was due to disturbance in the Slayer line.
How did Kendra’s people know about the calling? Who told them? And why wasn’t Buffy ever told?

Good point. I have always been baffled by this inconsistency.

As long as we’re talking inconsistencies, what ever happened to Buffy’s original watcher, the one Angel saw in his flashback to pre-slayer Buffy.

And what happened to the Slayer right previous to Buffy? In seven seasons, not one mention of how Buffy ascended to be the one? Seems a bit odd not to ever mention such a vital piece of slayer-lore.

    2. Mel says:

I can’t remember how or where I heard this but there was something about Buffy not being found in time to be trained.

Potential slayers are sometimes known and found and trained before activation, but Buffy slipped through the net.

There were a few potentials from season 7 that were already with their watchers.

In Showtime Kennedy says: “It’s called training. Didn’t your watcher ever teach you the word?”

And I think it’s Vi that says: “I’ve seen one. Well, my watcher once showed me a photograph of one. A blurry photograph”.

    3. Mel says:

Buffy’s first Watcher Merrick was killed in the Buffy movie.

And, the only reference to the slayer before Buffy that I know of is in a Buffy novel called The Book of Fours and her name was India Cohen.

Well, I’ve always thaught that Kendra was all trained up ‘cause The Watcher’s Council, as we came to know in Season Seven, has connection with a Coven… Witches, so, I think they used a Locator Spell.

Besides, in ‘Angel’ it’s said that there’s hundreds or even more Potential Slayers per generatios, so, I think it would be a bit hard to find and train every last one of ‘em… Specialy since they don’t even know wich one of them would become the next Slayer. Considerin’ that, it’s not hard to think that Buffy is one of the Potentials that they didn’t went to train, ‘cause thay just didn’t thaught it would be her.

      That’s what I think…

    5. Sunnydalehigh says:

I always thought that Kendra was found to be a potential very early in her life, so her watcher had time to explain all the slayer/watcher stuff to her parents. Then they realized how important Kendra was and “gave” her to her watcher to train with their blessings. Perhaps the people where Kendra is from had suffered vampire attacks before so they were happy to help the forces of good by handing Kendra over to her watcher. You know, a Sunnydale without the denial.
