In Revelations, Faith calls Gwendolyn Mary Poppins, after the eccentric British nanny from the book and the 1964 musical of the same name. In Once More, With Feeling, the men seen sweeping streets and dancing is an homage to the chimney sweeps’ dance from Mary Poppins. In Tabula Rasa, Spike says of Giles, “Oh listen to Mary Poppins. He’s got his crust all stiff and upper with that nancy-boy accent.” |

‘Mary Poppins’ is also referenced in the very next episode after Once More, With Feeling, Tabula Rasa. Spike says “Oh, listen to Mary Poppins!”, meaning Giles.

Does anybody know whether Bert (Dick van Dyke) has a surname?
Don’t ask why it has suddenly become important to know. Don’t think it’s mentioned in the film but can’t say for sure. Thanks for your help.

The computer says no.
At least, the IMDB website says no. The rubber-legged fool plays a chap called Mr Dawes elsewhere in the movie - and that guy has no first name. No wonder Dick van Dyke was rubbish!
Where Spike mocks Giles’ “MP” accent, it’s clear that James Marsters knows he doesn’t sound English. I’m a huge fan of people who can laugh at themselves.
