Falconers and demons

In The Monster Book, writer Doug Petrie shares some of the original ideas for Revelations that never made the final cut. Petrie states that the original intent of the Glove of Mynnigon was a “demonic falconer’s glove.” Petrie continued to state that “[w]hen you put it on and raised your arm, this huge, dark cloud would burst through the ceiling and take the form of a bird that spits fire.” This was determined to be an unfeasable and unfilmable idea. Petrie later used his idea of a demon bird story in a Buffy graphic novel he wrote for Dark Horse Comics.

Petrie also states that there was a large amount of debate as to whether Gwendolyn Post would be human or not.

Pretty penny

A line of Faith’s about her motel room was cut from Revelations: “The decorator just left. Cost me a pretty penny - but a motif like this don’t come cheap.”

Told you so

In a line cut for length from the episode Revelations, Cordelia proves she’s not convinced about the newly reformed Angel:

Cordelia: Okay, but when there’s a big massacre, who gets the I-told-you-so?”
Xander: “You get the I-told-you-so.”
Cordelia: “Just so we’re clear…”

Serena Scott Thomas

Serena played Gwendolyn Post in Revelations. Serena previously played another posh English woman when she portrayed Princess Diana in a controversial 1993 TV movie based on Andrew Morton’s book Diana: Her True Story. Serena played Dr. Molly Warmflash in the Bond movie The World is Not Enough. She is the sister of Kristin Scott Thomas, who starred in the movies The English Patient, The Horse Whisperer and Four Weddings and a Funeral.

Gwendolyn Post

Gwendolyn was a maverick Watcher who wanted the Glove of Mynnigon. She tricked the Scoobies into believing she was Faith’s new Watcher and got them to find the Glove. Buffy killed Gwendolyn when she realised she was bad in Revelations. Gwendolyn successfully isolated Faith from the rest of the Scoobies.
Giles says Gwendolyn Post was, “kicked out by the Council a couple of years ago for ‘misuses of dark power.’ They swear there was a memo.” Seems the Watcher’s Council could do with informing Giles of updates more often.

Lagos

Lagos was the huge demon in Revelations who was seekine the Glove of Mynhegon, which gives it’s wearer strong magical powers. Lagos is the Greek word for rabbit.

Alpert tomb

The Alpert tomb is a memorable tomb which can often be spotted when the Scoobies are wandering through Sunnydale’s graveyard. The tomb is named after Buffy producer Marc David Alpert. The tomb can be seen in Becoming (Part 1) (Angel comes out from behind it to fight Buffy when the other Scoobies are being ambushed), Revelations, The Zeppo, Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered, Killed By Death, Something Blue (when Buffy wants her wedding photos taken there), Superstar, Real Me, and Grave.

Buffster

Xander calls Buffy “Buffster” in the episodes Dead Man’s Party, Revelations, Buffy vs Dracula and Tough Love.

Can I kill her?

The appearance of the renegade Ms. Post in the episode Revelations makes the Scoobies suspicious of new Watchers. This is reflected when Wesley enters their lives later in the season.

Killing sewer monsters

In Revelations, Xander notes that Buffy has been, “killing zombies and torching sewer monsters”. These are references to the episodes Dead Man’s Party and Band Candy.

Knocked out

In Buffy vs Dracula, Giles falls into Dracula’s basement, where he is surrounded by the sisters. After he falls he says, “Good show, Giles. At least you didn’t get knocked out for a change.” In A New Man, Giles says he has a “tendency to get knocked on the head”. He’s not kidding. Giles has been knocked unconscious in the episodes:

• The Witch (by vampires who want to raise the Master again)
• Never Kill a Boy on the First Date (by Andrew Vorba in the crematorium)
• Prophecy Girl (by Buffy, to stop him from trying to help her)
• When She Was Bad (by the vampires attempting to raise the Master)
• Passion (by Angelus, after Giles attacks him for killing Jenny)
• Becoming (Part 1) (by a group of vampires who take him to Angelus)
• Beauty and the Beasts (shot with a tranquilizer gun)
• Homecoming (by Lyle Gorch and Candy).
• Revelations (by Gwendolyn Post, in his office)
• Gingerbread (by the MOO mob as they come to take Buffy away. When Cordy wakes him up shes says, “I came over here to tell Buffy to stop this craziness and found you all unconscious… again. How many times have you been knocked out, anyway? I swear, one of these times, you’re going to wake up in a coma.”)
• Earshot (he doesn’t get knocked out in this episode - but he does walk into a tree in a very amusing manner)
• Flooded (by the Mfashnik demon as it breaks ino Buffy’s house. Giles later says, “Well, I know I’m back in America now. I’ve been knocked unconscious”).

Must be Tuesday

In Revelations, Buffy says, “another Tuesday night in Sunnydale”, which is a reference to the fact that Buffy aired on Tuesdays in the U.S. In Once More, With Feeling, Buffy says, “So Dawn’s in trouble. Must be Tuesday”

Spiritual Angel

The exercise Angel is doing in the courtyard of the mansion in Band Candy, is T’ai Chi Ch’uan, a Chinese martial art which is also used as a form of Taoist yoga. Snyder later says in that episode he learnt “Tae Kwan Do at the Y” - a marked contrast to Angel. In Revelations Buffy and Angel do T’ai Chi together, before it gets too sexy for them.
We also see Angel performing T’ai Chi in the Angel episode In the Dark.

Sunnydale’s cemetaries

We discovered in Revelations that there were twelve cemeteries in Sunnydale, including Restfield Cemetery and the Shady Hill Cemetery.

The glass trick

Faith and Buffy fight and crash through a sheet of glass in Revelations. They do this two more times whilst fighting: in Graduation Day (Part 1) and This Year’s Girl.

Torture boy

Giles says to Buffy in Revelations, “sadly, I must remind you that Angel tortured me… for hours, for pleasure…” referring to the events of Becoming (Part 2).

Xander’s happys

In Revelations, Buffy says she was waiting to tell everyone about Angel being alive and Xander replys, “For what? For Angel to go psycho again the next time you give him a happy?”. In Lie to Me where Buffy and Willow are secretly talking about Angel meeting with Dru and Xander replys, “Hey, it’s me. If Angel’s doing somethin’ wrong, I wanna know. ‘Cause it gives me a happy!”

Four Star Mary

The music for Oz’s band Dingoes Ate My Baby was provided by real-life band Four Star Mary. James Marsters has performed with them on stage (off screen) a few times. The band themselves appeared in the season four finale Restless, as the band who play with Giles during the Exposition Song.

Four Star Mary songs can be heard in the following Buffy episodes:

• Inca Mummy Girl - The songs ‘Shadows’ and ‘Fate’ at the Cultural party in The Bronze.
• Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered - ‘Pain’ is heard in The Bronze.
• Dead Man’s Party - The Dingoes mime to ‘Pain’, ‘Nevermind’ and ‘Sway’ at Buffy’s party.
• Homecoming - we hear the song ‘She Knows’ at the Homecoming Dance - it’s the song Oz wrote for Willow.
• Living Conditions - ‘Pain is heard when Buffy and Willow move into their dorm room.
• Band Candy - the Dingoes mime onstage at The Bronze to ‘Violent’, when the adults are acting weirdly.
• Revelations - Dingoes Ate My Baby perform ‘Run’ in The Bronze at the start of the episode.
• The Harsh Light of Day - ‘Dilate’ is played at the Bronze at the start of the episode.
• The Initiative - Riley gets the song ‘Fate’ turned off at the party as it upsets Willow.

Lolly (Man of the Year)

In Revelations we hear ‘Silver Dollar’ by Lolly (Man of the Year) at the end of the episode.

Lotion

The band Lotion play their track “Blind For Now” from their album Nobody’s Cool when Willow and Cordelia are talking in The Bronze in Phases. In Revelations, we hear Lotion’s song “West of Here” (from The Telephone Album) as the Dingoes leave the stage.
There are two stickers for the band seen in Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered. One is on the locker behind Giles at the beginning of the episode, and the other is on the locker next to Cordelia’s.

Female Watchers

There have been several female Watchers seen on screen and mentioned on the show. Faith’s Watcher was a woman and Giles’ grandmother (mentioned in Never Kill a Boy on the First Date) was one. In Revelations we met a rogue female Watcher - Gwendolyn Post, and in Checkpoint we meet another female Watcher called Lydia. All this shows that though they’re stuffy in every way possible, the Watcher’s Council aren’t sexist at all.

Glove of Mynnigon

Gwendolyn Post alerted the Scoobies to the presence of the Glove of Mynnigon in the episode Revelations. It was buried in Sunnydale in the Von Hauftman family crypt in Sunnydale. Once worn, the Glove could never be removed. It attached itself to the wearer via steel clamps and those who wore it could then control the power of lightning. Angel attempted to destroy the Glove using living flame but he was attacked by Gwendolyn Post who put the glove on and tried to kill the Scoobies, before being killed by Buffy.

Hume’s Paranormal Encyclopaedia

In Revelations, Gwendolyn Post mentions several important texts which Giles does not have, including Hume’s Paranormal Encyclopaedia.

Labyrinth Maps of Malta

In Revelations, Gwendolyn Post said Giles did not have the book Labyrinth Maps of Malta in his library.

Marathon Man

Willow calls Giles, “The emotional marathon man” in Revelations. This is a reference to William Goldman’s character in his 1974 book. It was made into a movie in 1976 starring Dustin Hoffman.

Mary Poppins

In Revelations, Faith calls Gwendolyn Mary Poppins, after the eccentric British nanny from the book and the 1964 musical of the same name. In Once More, With Feeling, the men seen sweeping streets and dancing is an homage to the chimney sweeps’ dance from Mary Poppins. In Tabula Rasa, Spike says of Giles, “Oh listen to Mary Poppins. He’s got his crust all stiff and upper with that nancy-boy accent.”
