Summers’ Residence Floorplan

Please note: This trivia was suggested by ripper. It has not yet been approved.

Can anyone draw up a detailed floorplan for the Summers’ house? Upstairs & down. (Based, of course on what we see of the house). I can’t quite picutre how it’s laid out in my head. That would be really cool to have available here.

I’ve googled til I can google no more. I can’t find Buffy floorplans anywhere. Sorry, Ripper.

    2. ripper says:

Then let’s make ‘em! I’ll be working on some.

    3. Jess says:

Great idea, I’ll have a go when I get back home!

    4. ormaybemidgets says:

And in trying to help, I’ve become completely confused. Also, I’m going on memory here, so forgive me.

Walk in the door, there’s the stairs. With the foyer to the left of them. You can get to the kitchen by going down that foyer/hall (as seen in Listening to Fear). Then on the left of the stairs is the living room. It seemed in Restless that it was normal-sized, but in Season 7, there’s that table set up at the back (where Buffy sees the First as Joyce in… whatever episode) and there’s a smaller table to the side (where Dawn and Xander have their talk in Potential). I thought that you could get to the kitchen from the living room, but I can’t think of a time when that happened. Well, in Potential there’s a hallway that goes from the front, near the stairs to the back door. The hallway’s also seen the The Body, but the door to the kitchen is less like a door and more like an open wall. I think it’s also in End of Days, when she and Spike talk about their night together. Sometimes these rooms have doors to them. On the right of the stairs is the dining room, and you can get to the kitchen from there (shown in Showtime). The back door is in the kitchen (shown in Lover’s Walk, others). There’s a door to the basement in the kitchen, too (in Normal Again). Upstairs, not so sure. Joyce’s room is on the right (in Restless). The other rooms change around. I think in the early seasons it was a two-bedroom house, then they changed it for Dawn. Because they never showed the sewing room that Buffy sees should be there instead of Dawn in No Place Like Home.

This is frustrating. Now I’m gonna have to draw one out. I could think of less-fun uses of my time.

    5. ripper says:

I recently visited the Buffy house on Cota drive (not the inside). But I did sneak around to the back and saw that the back of the house will disprove any theory that you may have about what the upstairs looks like. There are two back doors and what seems to be a laundry room. I couldn’t get all the way in because there was a truck parked in the driveway (where Willow and Warren come wailing guns in “Seeing Red” and “The Killer In Me”) It was very cool to see it all, but a little frustrating. I wanted to go inside!!! I’ll post links to the pictures I got in a few days.

But as for the floorplan, I don’t think I ever noticed the hallway to the left of the stairs until I watched “The Body.” I can’t figure out exactly what happens between the kitchen and the back of the living room either. I think that may be where the laundry room is.

And the upstairs, I’m clueless. The only way I can figure it out is if the stairs take a turn at the top. Joyce’s bedroom is on the right of the top of the stairs, but in order to be at the back of the house (”Seeing Red”), the stairs would have to be facing toward the side of the house. The bathroom has two doors: one that leads to Joyce’s room, and one that leads to the hallway. The window that’s on the opposite side of Buffy’s (on the right of the house) is a mystery to me. Is that Dawn’s room? And you gotta have the window at the end of the hallway…

I know we can get this! I won’t rest until the mission is complete! :)

    6. MagicBone says:

Maybe about halfway up the stairs is a little landing type thing and from there the stairs go in a different direction, making Joyce’s/Willow’s/Buffy’s room in the back of the house. This could work because of that wall that blocks the top part of the stairs from view. This is visible a lot in season five when Dawn’s trying to listen in on Official Scooby Business from the stairs at night and not get caught. Please correct me if I’m wrong (and I didn’t mean that in a rude/conceited way at all).

    7. Mullsen says:

In ‘Tabula Rasa’ I seem to remember seeing that landing you’re talking about at the top of the stairs. Tara and Dawn are talking to Willow while she stands there, and then she seems to step up some stairs, (to her right) and down again. This would mean that Joyce’s bedroom, and Dawn’s, are to the back of the house, and Buffy’s bedroom and the bathroom are at the front.
That seems to make sense, as Dawn sneaks out her bedroom window and ends up in the back-garden, and Buffy sneaks out using the roof of the front-porch.

    8. ormaybemidgets says:

Oh, good point about the way they sneak out. I didn’t even think of that.

Also, I remember that landing in Tabula Rasa. But in This Year’s Girl and Ted, they fall straight down the stairs, indicating that there’s no landing.

Here’s an entirely confusing look at the upstairs, as seen in
      Ted.

    9. ormaybemidgets says:

Oops, I hit submit too soon.

If Buffy’s room is the one closest to her, it could be her bathroom across, Joyce’s room near the stairs, and what will later be Dawn’s room next to Buffy’s. But in Season 7, they say there’s only one bathroom, which would mean that in the early years, Joyce and Buffy shared; in the later years, Joyce, Buffy, and Dawn shared; and in Season 6, Buffy, Dawn, Willow and Tara shared. (Bringing up, why isn’t there a bathroom downstairs? And who makes a three bedroom, one bathroom house?)

The laundry room is the basement (As You Were).

I don’t remember seeing that Joyce’s bathroom door led to the hall (episode?). In Fool For Love (also seen in This Year’s Girl), Buffy goes in the door and the bed’s almost next to her. If she was standing in the doorway, the bathroom would be on the right. So it shouldn’t lead anywhere except for back into her room.

In Listening to Fear, Dawn and Joyce’s doors are almost right next to each other. Crap. How does that fit in?

    10. slightlyembarrased says:

      Ok…this is just disturbing.

    11. ormaybemidgets says:

      Disturbing, or… slightly less disturbing?

    12. mairceridwen says:

      and I thought I was overanalytical….

    13. MagicBone says:

      God do we need lives…

    14. ghola8 says:

It would be cool to see a floorplan…But ummmm we dont need to sneak around in people’s backyards, man!

    15. ildjarn says:

One of the DVDs has blueprints of the Summers house. I’ll see if I can find anything, and if I can make screenshots of it.

    16. ildjarn says:

I checked the special features of season 1 and 3-7, but no blueprints there. So it might be in season 2, and a colleague borrowed that one….

    17. beagle says:

What is that room where Buffy hurls on the carpet? (in The Body). Man, this could go on forever. I didn’t know that they shot inside of the house. duh, thought that was all sets on the lot. or the back yard either.

    18. ormaybemidgets says:

I watched the thing on the Season 2 DVD…

Okay. Stairs. To the left is the foyer/hallway. This goes directly into the kitchen. Back to the stairs, on the left is the living room. It runs the whole house front to back. There’s a fireplace on the wall across from the entrance. There are two glass doors for the entrance (best seen in This Year’s Girl). In the living room, if you walk the whole length and are at the back, on the right is a “back” entrance to the kitchen. Back to the stairs, on the right is the dining room with the kitchen behind it. Upstairs is Dawn’s room directly in front of the stairs, Joyce’s room to the right. Turn left and go down the hall. At the end of the hall it’s just a wall (rhyme!) with Buffy’s room on the right and the bathroom-so I guess there are two-on the left.

Where Buffy throws up in The Body is between the living room, at the back, and the back entrance to the kitchen.

    19. ormaybemidgets says:

      Okay, I tried.

      Downstairs Floorplan

    20. AnyaRocks says:

That’s pretty good! you should be proud of yourself!

    21. ormaybemidgets says:

      “nice midgets!”

      LOL

Yeah, I think that’s where he comes from. The most confusing floorplan-scenes were when she throws up in The Body and in End of Days, when Spike walks away one way and Buffy goes the other and they meet at the back door.

Also, under the stairs is the closet that Oz and Cordy are in, in Dead Man’s Party.

    22. slightlyembarrased says:

There is an opening, though, from the living room into the kitchen, at the back (as seen in, e.g., “Dead Man’s Party”).

Other than that, nice job midgets.

    23. slightlyembarrased says:

      …and I still find this “slightly” disturbing…

    24. ormaybemidgets says:

Okay, but see, just slightly. So either we’re getting more normal, or you’re getting less normal. Or possibly you’re just humoring me so that I think I’m more normal, which… thank you.

    25. ormaybemidgets says:

Oh, and also, yes, there’s supposed to be a doorway/opening there. I just forgot. Odd since I believe I wrote about that earlier but am too lazy to read my own post.

    26. slightlyembarrased says:

It’s always a sound policy to humour the crazy guy (girl? your ID doesn’t say)…but, in truth, you’re wearing me down. I may, someday soon, find all this not in the least bit disturbing.

    27. ormaybemidgets says:

      Girl.

And look at me! I can convert the masses into crazies! It’s like a superpower (I want a cape).

    28. slightlyembarrased says:

What would you call yourself? The InsaneMaker? Captain Crazy? The Lunatic Launcher?

    29. Springy Sunshine says:

As opposed to Captain Cardboard? :)

    30. ormaybemidgets says:

      The Lunatic Launcher!

Yes, yes. Except this would be my name for when I’m catapulting the newly-turned.

I could be The InsaneMaker, post-turning; and then The InsaneMaker: The Sequel, (subtitle) The Luantic Launcher.

Although that is a lot of words. How much does it cost to make capes these days?

    31. ormaybemidgets says:

It might say “post-turning”, but it’s pronounced “pre-turning”.

    32. ormaybemidgets says:

Do I even make sense? Not just now. Ever?

    33. slightlyembarrased says:

“Do I even make sense? Not just now. Ever?”

No, not really, but, on the bright side, no one here is really listening.

      *wink*

    34. slightlyembarrased says:

midgets…I think you may find this amusing, it’s called Khan Finds Waldo:

      http://khanfindswaldo.ytmnd.com/

    35. ormaybemidgets says:

How many times can you watch that and not realize it’s the same thing over and over before you’re crazy? Is it eight? Is eight the crazy number? (I’ve heard things.) Because I swear it only took me seven times.

“unless of course someone called you that a long comment ago.”
People have called me a midget in my… life. But real life doesn’t count.

    36. slightlyembarrased says:

“you sure made me insane midgets…i would also like to point out that i made that nickname, slightlyem, i’m stealing your job.”

….I would have nicknamed her “o’midgets”..steal my job, will ya!?!…

    37. samlab03 says:

did any of you ever draw a floor plan of the house?

    38. beagle says:

If someone sketches a floorplan, I’ll draw it on AutoCadd, scan it as an image file, and maybe Jess might want to put it on the site.

    39. somethingblue says:

Beags, you are so cool, in an engineering kind of way, what with your autocad and all….

    40. slightlyembarrased says:

“Autocad”? Is that a really insensitive guy who simply can’t help himself?

…”You, sir, are an autocad and an autobounder!”…

    41. slightlyembarrased says:

Jess…It would seem that the site is hitting on almost all cylinders now. Good work!

    42. somethingblue says:

Surely I’m not the only female on this site who has heard engineers talking about AutoCadd…although I worked in the Plumbing Industry for awhile…actually, those were some pretty fun days!

I hope someone can sketch out the summers house for Beags, cause that would be wicked cool. Beags obviously has “mad skills” (SUCH a good Faith line)

    43. Jess says:

Slightlyem - I know and I don’t want to jinx it by talking about it much, but it does appear to coincide with Abby’s reappearance. Better be nice to her, everyone.

There does seem to be certain times in the day when the site’s ok (in the morning for me - afternoon is worse, evening is terrible and night is back to good again).

    44. Angel242 says:

I guess I’m lucky, the site’s nearly always good when I’m on it.

    45. Angel242 says:

And GOD. You people drive me crazy, I’m trying really hard to advance on the stats the most vocal user, and I’m away for 4 days and I have fallen down to 11!!!
I can’t take this anymore…it has to end. *twisted smile*

    46. Abby M. says:

Wow, I was gone for 20 days and was still number 1…for me, right now the site is a little slow but it is worse in the evening.

    47. Abby M. says:

BTW: Thank you Jess, I take your last comment as a compliment.

    48. samlab03 says:

i made buffys house on The Sims yesterday, i just have to decorate it, upstairs was the hardest to do…

    49. samlab03 says:

it took a while, i’m still not completely sue if its right though

    50. beagle says:

Cool? Engineering, Autocadd? Oh gosh you guys/we are geeks for real.

    51. somethingblue says:

An engineer with Autocadd, see, that’s cool because it’s something not everyone can do. And of course we’re geeks for real, we just wouldn’t be on this site if we weren’t:) Plus, you’re the one who’s the engineer…

    52. NinjaBunny says:

I have Adobe Illustrator. I spent a few hours taking the measurements from the blueprints at the end of S2CD6 and transferred them into a picture. Unfortunately, it is not to scale - No AutoCAD :(

Also the second floor doesn’t seem to exist in this reality. At least not if you try to connect the different rooms together at one time. Still, at least it is a start. I tried watching different episodes to get better perspective. I also have a 3D modeling program which I can use to take a *scale* model and create …

Wait, do I need to get out more?

    53. Jess says:

If any of you can send me something like this which I can put on the site for all to see, email me at jess@restlessbtvs.com

    54. Jess says:

And here’s the first floor plan, courtesy of NinjaBunny - thanks!

    55. Abby M. says:

Hmm…looks how I imagined her house. The only thing I notice that is weird is that in Buffy’s season 6 birthday party, there is a door on the left of the stair case. Yet in The Body, when Giles looks through, there is no door.

    56. somethingblue says:

Just looked at Jess’s floorplan link, so cool. Beags, can you AutoCadd this thing and is there a second floor on the DVD? Also, I always imagined the kitchen at the end of the foyer hallway, not to the right, isn’t that funny? On the DVD’s, the set designers created the house with moveable walls so they could shoot the inside shots from lots of different angles, so the house really was in constant flux. Also, on disk four, I think of Angel season 1, there are floorplans of Cordy’s and Angel’s apartments, those are pretty cool too.

    57. beagle says:

that’s pretty cool ningab, I’ll try to cad this. It won’t be too much more than the nins but we can fancy it up a bit. Then maybe start adding details like windows, try to guestimate a working scale and such. It will be a work in progress.
is that little room at the top, between the dining room and kitchen the one B barfed in in The Body? Gosh, I seem to be obsessed with that scene. Yuck.

    58. NinjaBunny says:

Beags - the are alot of measurements on the S2D6 DVD but I was too lazy to use them. Does anyone have any exterior shots of the back of the house? I saw one but I can’t remember where.
I thought that the area where B barfed (between the kitchen & dining room) was more of a hallway/passage than a room. I think SMG played the whole barf thing well. Actually at the beginning of the ep, Xander mentions barfing at dinner. Right. I’ll just stop there before I start trying to map the locations of where each character barfed during the whole series.

    59. Janneman says:

Still wondering where the toilet is located on the groundfloor…

And also..where should the bathroom be located on the second floor? When I look on the S2D6 DVD there seem to be an outside area between the kitchen and the dining room. So Joyce’s room cannot be connected to the bathroom..

And even more mysterious is the fact that the entrance from the landing hall to the bathroom should be right over the staircase…So when u go in the bathroom U should fall right on to the stairs…

    60. Janneman says:

For those intrested I tried to draw a floorplan of the second floor with the knowledge sofar…

U can take a look on:

      http://home.planet.nl/~krijn272/Buffy/floorplan.jpg

      Any thoughts are welcome..

    61. Sunnydalehigh says:

You guys are too cool! I love the floorplans.

      AutoCadd rocks!

    62. blutortu says:

So far the work has been pretty awesome. At least one thing missing in your upstairs floorplan, Janneman, is a door leading directly from Joyce’s room into Dawn’s. An odd architectural feature, I know, but remember it was Joyce’s office/storage room before Dawn entered the picture.

Also, Joyce has her own bathroom somewhere, so I think there are two bathrooms upstairs. I’m coming in late in the game, but I’ll rewatch season seven with the idea of making my own blueprint and posting it here.

I am a dork, but this is the kind of thing I live for. Sadly.

    63. TwoToGo-Grave says:

If she does have a bathroom to herself, it could be connected to her room and the other bathroom. This would be logical, since the plumming could work out well this way. However, I wasn’t too sure about something. I don’t recall any scenes that show a balcony, like the one that is shown here. I don’t doubt that it’s there; I just have no recollection of it.

    64. Fiona says:

Hey all, well I just stumbled into this site and I am so glad there are people out there as curious as me over the architecture of the “Summers’” home! I did do quite a detailed plan of their home but I seem to have the same confusion about the upstairs floor plan as everyone else!!
Im only new to this web site and haveing to put attachments on, (and I know Ill only stuff it up)so if you would like me to send you a copy I would love to show you my version of the house!!

    65. Jess says:

Hi Fiona, and welcome to the site. If you like you can email me your plan and I’ll put it on the site. My email is jess@restlessbtvs.com.

    66. TwoToGo-Grave says:

It would be nice to see that floorplan. I have thought about this since reading this trivia the other day, and I must say that I wonder what Fiona’s layout looks like as well.

    67. Rain says:

Thanks for the floorplans. I’ll consult my local gang of Buffy buffs and see what we can come up with for the top floor.

    68. Janneman says:

The floorplan that I drew is a plan according to the layout from the ground floor…seemed that they used another idea for the second floor.

The balcony is never used in the series, but is clearly visible when you would stand in front of the house - as seen in this picture:

I will draw a floorplan of the knowledge so far from seeing 7 seasons, very soon.

    69. Jess says:

Fiona’s floorplan can be found here (it’s a Word document).

    70. Janneman says:

I think Fiona’s floorplan is as close as we can get to the floorplan of the second. Too bad we can never see a door(eg in Restless, Once More and StoryTeller wich gives us a good view on the landing Hall) to the room that should be in front of the bathroom..Also does anyone recalls a shot of the area between Buffy’s and Dawns Room? I’ve always wondered what that area was..and even why they made that there…The passage to Joyce’s room and the bathroom remains a mystery to me…Well I guess that living on a Hellmouth, besides some unwanted side effects, seems to solve your architectal problems… Makes u wonder how Xander would be in construction outside Sunnydale…

    71. joanthevampireslayer says:

I know this is late but I figure there is a landing on the stairs and that the upstairs is perpenticular to the downstairs. Also I think that there is only one bathroom and that there is a door to it from Joyce’s old room and from the hallway. What if Joyce’s room was over the bottom of the stairs? Does anyone know if that is possible?

    72. joanthevampireslayer says:

Also, I read some where that they just used the real house (1313 Cota Dr., Torrence CA) for far away shots and that they didn’t even use it for the back, just the front. Also I read that the actual house is smaller than the sets for it are.
