On another site, someone pointed out that Spike knocked the sign down again, in a manner of speaking, in Chosen, the series finale. Spike was instrumental in the destruction of the Hellmouth, an act that caused Sunnydale to become a huge pit. In the last moments, as the remaining Scoobies stood on the perimeter looking into the pit, the Sunnydale sign fell over into it.

Yeah. The city of Sunnydale updated it. Probably figured they might as well, since people apparently hated the other one so much!
Anyway, the point was that Spike knocked over the city’s official sign three times. (The second one wasn’t necessarily the “same sign” either. The first one may have been tossed and replaced with a fresh one after Spike ran into it. Also, the third time, the sign was in a different location. Cities have more than one main entrance, so they have more than one sign posted.)
