Anne Rice

Anne Rice was the author of a popular best-selling series of vampire novels, including Interview with the Vampire, The Vampire Lestat and Queen of the Damned. In School Hard, Spike says to Angel, “People still fall for that old Anne Rice routine?”
In Buffy vs Dracula, Buffy tells Dracula, “I’ve fought more than a couple pimply, overweight vamps that called themselves Lestat.” She’s referring to the main charismatic vampire character of Anne Rice’s The Vampire Chronicles.
The story in Lies My Parents Told Me of Spike siring his mother as a vampire may come from Anne Rice’s The Vampire Chronicles. In the book, the character Lestat sired his mother Gabrielle, because she was ill and to prevent her from dying.
When Darla tries to get a vampire to sire her in The Trial, they have the following conversation:

Darla: “Weird?! It’s mythic!”
Shempire: “No, you been reading too much Anne Rice, lady. You got no idea how this thing works.”

In Origin, Connor asks Angel, “Do you spend all your time making out with other vampires, like in Anne Rice novels?”

Connor asks Angel if he spends his time making out with other vampires like in Anne Rice novels in “Origins” angel season five

    2. AnyasFloppyEars says:

Anne Rice always makes me think of the bit where Spike’s sitting on a roof mocking Angel as the walking frown saves a damsel in an alley.

How glad I am that the Buffyverse contains Spike and co., when it could so easily have been all coats and foreheads and despair (with a bit of boy on boy snogging thrown in for Ms Rice’s own sexual gratification).

    3. MagicBone says:

“…when it could have been all coats and foreheads and despair…”

That is funny. I like Angel, not as much as I like Spike but still, that is very clever.

    4. somethingblue says:

I love Spike’s running commentary on that Season 1 Angel episode (I can’t remember the name), but Spike is so funny…love him!!

    5. NotFadeAway says:

That episode is called “In the Dark” and it’s episode three of Season One. That scence is really funny.

    6. Comfortador says:

“could so easily have been all coats and foreheads and despair (with a bit of boy on boy snogging thrown in for Ms Rice’s own sexual gratification).”

Funny! And I’m not even sure what snogging means.

    7. Abby M. says:

It’s English (meaning England, not American) slang for kissing/making out.

    8. somethingblue says:

In Harry Potter fame, JK Rowling is constantly asked about who her characters will be “snogging” next, that’s the only way I realized what it meant. And “boy on boy” snogging cracks me up, makes me think of Buffy’s comment in Chosen, season 7:

BUFFY: “You know, one of these days I’m just gonna put you 2 in a room and let you wrestle it out.”

SPIKE: “No problem at this end.”

BUFFY: “There could be oil of some kind involved.”
