Cecily was an English woman who Spike (then known as William) loved and wrote poetry for in the late 1800s. She rebuffed William, seen in a flashback in Fool For Love, telling him he was beneath her. Cecily later became, we believe, Halfrek the vengeance demon. Halfrek meets Spike in Older and Far Away and, though nothing explicit is said, the two clearly recognise each other. She says, “William?” and the two exchange a brief, knowing look. Appeared in: Fool For Love |

The casting people made a big “oops” by hiring the same actress for the two parts, so I’m glad that they acknowledged it with the “William?” line. That’s the great thing about BtVS–the writers understand that we viewers are paying attention!

In Lies My Parents Told Me, Spike’s mother, Anne, refers to Cecily as “the Underwood’s eldest”. So perhaps this character’s now got herself a surname?
And on the writers being cool thing - in Selfless, during the St Petersburg 1905 flashback with Halfrek and Anyanka, Drew Goddard says in his commentary that they’d originally meant for it to flashback to the C17th (can’t remember specifically, sorry), but then they realised that would be inconsistent with Cecily’s time line. Yey for Drew being such a huge Buffy geek!
