5.02 Just Rewards

Spike’s essence emerges from the amulet in the mysterious envelope, but he is now incorporeal. In effect, he is a ghost. For some reason, Spike is linked to Wolfram & Hart and cannot leave L.A. As the gang struggles with this new development, Angel tries to put a dangerous necromancer, Hainsley, out of business. Unfortunately, Hainsley is very powerful and he offers Spike a chance to be made flesh again — in Angel’s body.

Spike: Think I'm hot, do you?
Fred: Hmm. Lukewarm. Just above room temperature.

Magnus Hainsley

Magnus Hainsley was a Necromancer and one of Wolfram & Hart’s oldest clients. He had the power to take the essence of his demon clients via his own body and place them within a corpse chosen by the client. W&H had supplied these bodies until Gunn and Angel decided to close down the Interment Acquisitions Division of the firm, thus stopping Hainsley’s supply of fresh bodies and endangering his business. Hainsley’s ‘power over the dead’ gave him the ability to control Angel and Spike, but by using this ability against him, Spike was able to control Hainsley so that Angel could fight and kill him.

Comparing souls

In the Angel episode Just Rewards, Angel says to Spike:

“Fair?! You asked for a soul. I didn’t! It almost killed me. I spent a hundred years trying to come to terms with infinite remorse. You spent 3 weeks moaning in a basement, and then you were fine! What’s fair about that?”

This is a reference to Spike’s time in the school basement at the start of Buffy’s season season. We also find out in this episode that Angel didn’t tell his team that Spike had a soul.

Just Rewards

In the Angel season five episode ‘Conviction‘, Angel is sent the amulet which destroyed Sunnydale and Spike emerges from it. In ‘Just Rewards‘, we see a flashback to Spike’s death scene from Chosen. One of the first things that Spike asks Angel, after coming out from the amulet, is where and how Buffy is.

Ghost

In Never Leave Me, Andrew compares Warren/The First to Patrick Swayze. Swayze starred in the 1990 movie Ghost in which his non-corporeal ghost attempts to avenge his own murder. In Rm W/A View, Cordelia mentions the same movie when she says, “Old lady ghost. How come Patrick Swayze’s never dead when you need him?”
In Just Rewards, Harmony says to the now non-corporeal Spike, “Why should now be any diff’? Just ‘cause you’ve gone all Patrick Swayze?”

Quotes

Angel: I spent a hundred years trying to come to terms with infinite remorse. You spent three weeks moaning in a basement, and then you were fine. What's fair about that?

Lorne: Yeah. The Vampire Slayer both men loved, both men lost. Oh, I could sell that to any studio in a heartbeat.

Spike: Think I'm hot, do you?
Fred: Hmm. Lukewarm. Just above room temperature.

Wesley: Do you remember what happened?
Spike: You mean my skin and muscle burning away from the bone? Organs exploding in my chest? Eyeballs melting in the sockets? No. No memory at all. Thanks for asking

Angel: You're not in this world.. Casper.

Spike: I bet you're loving this.
Angel: Knowing you'll be haunting me til the end of time? It's a dream come true.

Fred: I'm detecting brain activity.
Angel: On Spike? That is weird.

Spike: A spoon? That's just.. well, ok. That's just, disappointing.

Angel: I'm in a meeting, Spike.
Spike: Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't care.

Spike: Or maybe Captain Forehead was feeling a little less special.

Harmony: Slayer loving freak.

Spike: I must be in hell.
Lorne: Er no L.A., but a lot of people make that mistake.

Hainsley: I'll put you back in the driver's seat of your afterlife.

Spike: That's how you're gonna fight the forces of evil now? Call the IRS?

Spike: What, think I could really stand hanging out with you and your lot now and forever? Wisecracking ghost sidekick? No bloody thanks!

Hainsley: You think you can get away with that? I'll sue you to hell!
Angel: Good luck, we're your lawyers!

Hainsley: I eat the dead for breakfast son, and you're just another plate of bacon and eggs.

Angel: I'm from Wolfram & Hart.
Spike: And I'm his date.
