Here’s something I’ve never understood: How did Angel go from being his relatively normal,brooding self living in an L.A hotel in the 1950’s, buying blood from the butcher, to being a straggly-haired, smelly hobo, living on “a rat a month”, as Whistler says? |

This is sort of explained in the Angel episode Orpheus.
When Angel feeds of the doughnut shop worker, he feels really guilty and so starts living off rats.
Angelus: “Twenty years after that stupid donut shop and his fingers never smelled of anything but rat! I’m so
sorry. I give up. I’m gonna live in a sewer.”
He felt so guilty that he started living underground.

Maybe he felt gulit over letting all those people die in the Hotel. I think it kind of went down hill from there.
