When Spike finds out about the spell the Scoobies performed to bring Buffy back from the dead, he gets mad and pushes Xander against a tree. Why didn’t Spike’s chip go off when he hit Xander? |

Actually, if you notice his reaction, it did. He pushes Xander into the tree and winces before he starts speaking.

Also, if it isn’t Spike’s intention to harm Xander, the chip isn’t activated. If he knows or doesn’t believe his actions will harm a human, the chip isn’t triggered and he doesn’t feel pain.
Philosophically, I wonder if this partially explains the reason why Spike can harm Buffy. Since he knows how much pain she is already in, it’s possible to conclude that anything he does to her couldn’t possible make her more damaged than she already is.
Although I kinda believe Tara’s explanation of the situation, I think there’s something to be said for Spike’s capacity for empathy and substitution.

Wow, I never thought of that! That’s a damned good deduction, there. :-)

When Buffy looks at the picture of
Xander, Willow and herself - Xander and Willow have the same hair styles as they do presently. But that picture had to be taken before Buffy died and Xander and Willow had different hair styles in Season 5.

Yeah, like Mike said, he winces as if in pain and I doubt that he hurt Xander much at all just by pushing him into a tree so it would’nt’ve hurt that much for Spike
