I've tried to chose the most talked about episodes as well as some of my personal favorites; cutting the list down to 7 per season was pretty tough, there's definitely room for argument about the ones I chose... But you get the idea!
This segment will address questions from the audience, should there ever be any... anything else you'd like to see covered in this course? Random questions? Just fill out the contact form. If it's a specific question rather than a suggestion, be sure to let me know if it's okay to post the text of your question in this section...
Just so there's something here in the meantime, I'll make up the first one myself:
Q: What kind of mythology do the vamps in the Buffyverse adhere to?
A: Most common vampire mythology is in effect. Vamps are killed by a stake through the heart, beheading, fire, full daylight. They dissolve into dust when killed. Holy water, crosses & indirect sunlight burns them, but doesn't out right kill them. They are much stronger than humans. They need blood, but it doesn't have to be human blood, they just prefer that. They cast no reflections in mirrors. They don't need to breath. They cannot enter a person's home without an invitation, but once invited, they can always enter without further ado (there is however a spell that can be done to "de-invite" them after the fact). They don't die of old age or disease and don't age (well in theory; clearly some vamps we know have aged because the actors have! Esp. Angel.) New vampires are formed when a near-death victim is fed some of the vampire's own blood, which causes the victim's soul to depart and to be replaced with a demon. This results in vampires sharing memories and personality traits with their original human selves. Up until recently, it's been taken for granted that all vampires are irredeemably evil because they do not have souls (Spike's situation is muddying the waters, but it still seems to basically hold true). Main vamps usually look human and only transform themselves into "vamp face" during fights or when about to feed. Minion vamps are perpetually vamp faced. Except for Dracula, whose special powers were attributed to "showy gypsy stuff", vampires can't transform into other animals, exert mind control or fly.
Q: so like is Buffy THE slayer or are there other slayers around? There was Faith and Kendra so are there like slayers in every town? (Andy, 2/1/2002)
A:The Official Slayer SpielTM goes:
Into each generation a Slayer is born, one girl in all the world, a Chosen One, one born with the strength and skill to hunt the vampires, to stop the spread of their evil blah, blah, blah...or, as the opening voice-over puts it in early episodes:
In every generation, there is a chosen one. She alone will stand against the vampires, the demons and the forces of darkness. She is the slayer.
When the current slayer dies, the next Slayer in line is "activated", that is to say her powers kick into gear, and a Watcher arrives to help train her. (Some girls with the potential to become slayers have Watcher's assigned to them before they're called, just in case) At the end of season 1, Buffy drowned, and while she was dead, Kendra was activated. Xander brought Buffy back with CPR, but there's no "deactivation" so Kendra stayed a slayer, and there were 2 concurrent slayers. Until Kendra was killed at the end of Season 2 by Drusilla. Then *her* death triggered Faith's activation. Since Buffy'd already gotten her replacement (Kendra), her death at the end of Season 5 didn't activate any new slayers. The only way to get a new Slayer is for Faith to die, since the line has passed on to her. * [Spoilerish, highlight the following if you want a hint: this changes in the series finale]
Q: So according to the little spiel thing, the Slayer is always female. Is there ever any reason given for that? (Dev, 3/25/2002)
A:I don't think there's an answer within the Buffy-verse, it's always just been stated that the Slayer is by definition female. Of course out in the real world, there is somewhat of an answer. I couldn't find the exact quote I had in mind, but here's one that's close, by Joss: "I created Buffy the Vampire Slayer as a movie a long time ago to protect the blonde girl in the alley who always got killed." So the Slayer is female because Joss thought having the tiny blond girl who you think is going to be the first to die at the hands of whatever monster's running amuck in this particular movie turn out to actually be the monster's worst nightmare was pretty cool. Being short and blond myself: Agreed ;-)
Q: What does "5x5" mean? Pertaining to Faith? (Simmerman81, 5/8/2002)
A: Now I have no official confirmation for this, but what I've heard around is that it's an old radio/cb kind of term. It means you have a strong signal, and can hear the person fine. Perhaps something to do with "on a scale of 1 to 5, how clear is the signal? and how loud is the signal?" so 5 by 5 would be "loud and clear". Metaphorically speaking, we can translate "everything's good".
Q: Why did Angel leave? (anon, 1/3/2003)
A: the Buffyverse reason Angel left was that he felt that he and Buffy could not work together as friends, and that they couldn't be happy together as a couple either, so him sticking around was just preventing her from being able to move on, be in a normal relationship and have a chance at a bit of happiness. The most relevant conversation is found in the Prom. Of course in the real world, Angel was going to the main character of a spinoff, so he had to leave the parent show...
Q: Why did Giles leave? (anon, 1/3/2003)
A: In the Buffyverse, Giles left because he felt that Buffy was growing too dependant on him, that she wasn't standing on her own two feet and becoming an adult because she knew he would always be around to pick up the slack. The musical includes a song where he sings about this (Standing in the Way) and then in the next episode, he explains to Buffy. In real life, Anthony Stewart Head wanted to spend more time with his family in England and not so much time in California shooting BtVS.
Q: When Buffy stabed Angel just as he got his soul back and sent him to hell did he lose his soul again or does he still have it? I'm truly confused over the state of Angel's soul and whether the old gypsy curse is still in effect. (feywriter, 1/13/2002)
A:Some of this is left pretty vague by the writers, and there are many points
that fans disagree on, but here's the conclusions I've come to... in Becoming
Part II Willow
successfully repeats the original spell that gave Angelus a soul, but since it was too late
and the portal was already opening, Buffy had to skewer Angel anyway to save the world. So when he was sent to the hell dimension, it was with his soul restored and intact. And he still
had it when he mysteriously came back at the end of Faith, Hope & Trick
which was why he was good once he got over the lingering effects of being tortured and came back to himself.
Ever since, everyone has treated
him like they think the gypsy curse is still in effect. And in fact, once,
when someone slipped him some "happy pills" (on AtS) he temporarily reverted to
Angelus. Then again, it could just be that he *believes* it's in effect, and
that's really the important part... The matter hasn't been definitly settled,
but for now, I think it's safest to assume that Willow reinstated the original
gypsy spell exactly as it was, and so it's still working same as it
always has been...
